I have got Abiword installed on Amigo 2.0. Had to install numerous packages from Slack (including more fonts from x directory) to get it up and running. When starting Abiword from xterm I got this error:

(abiword:229): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported

Is there any other good word processors around, with less dependencies? I concider using Mozilla web page editor as a word processor. Any other ideas?

Getting Abiword going was one of the first things I've done for the upcoming AmigoXp.
The error you are getting can be resolved by installing the glibc pkg, another big one.
Abiword and most really nice progs need GTK, which needs glibc, glib2 and you'll want atk,pango and the aspell libs. this does make it possible to run LOTS of other progs such as Firefox.
SIAG is a small wordprocessor, but very crude. TED has the best compatibility with MS .doc files but is ugly.
I had thought of trying to compile abiword 1.2-1.4 from slackware 8.1 which runs on gtk1.2. Perhaps you'd like to try that for us?, as there aren't any good alternatives.

I have compiled Abiword for Amigo Linux (from Slackware 8.1), where can I upload it?

How big is it? if not too big, send to me as e-mail attachment and I will upload it. My /incoming directory is just an anonymous e-mail account anyway.

I mean if not too big for your SMTP server. Many free e-mail services such as aol, yahoo, etc., used to have small limits of 1-6MB for attachments. I think this may have changed now, as some are offering 1GB mailboxes.
Anyway, the Amigo (ibiblio) server will handle that okay. you have my address.
Did you check the specific depends for that yet? I'm pretty sure it would ask for aspell, first, and then libglade. But I'm not sure what else -maybe atk and pango, but I think not.
If you can check that by removing the extra libs you installed, then start abiword from an xterm and you'll see the errors as it misses the libs.
You will probably need 'links' installed for the HELP to work -if at all.

I appreciate the help on this. Even though I've spent the last couple of months building a mid-size GTK+2 desktop, there is still a need for good gtk+1 applications and I had that idea.
I have built a great ROX-based desktop for the upcoming AmigoXP. Along the way I have found several gtk+1 ROX AppDir's, and I have been 'hacking' a few for inclusion in AmigoXP. I'm going to make these available, along with other Slack-compatible packages I've made for AmigoXP. Some of these will work on Amigo-2.0 also.

You install the Abiword package as a usual Slack package (installpkg abiword-amigo-i386-1.tgz).

Funny, but I got no error messages when I ran abiword in xterm. But it won't work. It starts normal, but you cannot write any text, Abiword refuses to accept letters. When I install all of the Slack packages in the /l directory, everything works normal. Will try again to find out what packages are needed.

Im going to try the /incoming dir again so you'll be able to use ftp in future, hopefully. I can check depends here, also.
