I have been trying to access my RS/6000 using hyperterminal and I don't think my console is defined properly? The display appears okay but when I try to login I enter the root user id and press enter and it keeps returning me to the "login:" prompt???

I have tried using the "export TERM=" command and have tried it with the following terminal types vt220, lft, & lft0 however none of them seem to be working. When I boot into maintenance I am unable to edit files with vi. Smitty also doesn't display properly, the arrow keys do not work? I am assuming the console is not defined properly?

Has anyone used hyperterminal or a similar application with their laptop connecting to an RS6000? What terminal type did you use? Any help would be appreciated.

Hyperterminal should work OK. I have seen this bug with other remote console setups so I think the problem is at the AIX end.

Try the following :
- Sometimes I found that it just works after a while; say ten attempts.
- Sometimes I found that alternating between non-root and root logins seemed to get it working.

A maintenance level upgrade seemed to fix the problem (this was over a year ago, so probably to AIX 4.3.3 ML10).

With the terminal settings, the two that work most often are vt100 and ibm3151 so give those a go.
