I have AIX 5.1 on RS/6000, when i switch on the machine i did not get the login prompt in the console. i can work through the telnet. can anyone tell what could be the problem and how to rectify the problem.
1. Login isn't enabled on the console.
You can enable the console through smit.
Type smitty and select "assign the console". There is an option "Enable for LOGIN" which should be "yes". If not, tab to change it and hit enter to fix.
2. AIX thinks the console is somewhere else
Type smitty and then select "assign the console". If you have an ascii screen attached, it is probably /dev/tty0; if you have a monitor attached it should be /dev/lft0.
3. If you have a monitor for a console, I've seen a problem (on AIX 4.3.3) where it freezes if it hasn't been used for a few months. Killing the dtlogin process (which then respawns) should fix it if this is the case.
