RS/6000 7013 53h Resurrection/serial pinout

Hi all, In short, I’m trying to find out how to connect an ASCII terminal to a RS/6000 7013. 530H (53h)

The long version:

I should point out that I have no experience with AIX or RS/6000’s, although I have had experience with IBM’s PS/2 line of computers that share the same bus with this RS/6000, MCA.

From what I have gathered so far, I need to connect the terminal to S1, set it to 9600baud, turn the server into service mode, switch on and I should get some kind of output on the terminal.

The problem I’ve got it that the serial connectors (S1, S2) have a weird connector. Instead of a DB9 or DB25 connector, it is like the pin header arrangement you get on an AT motherboard where you plug the ribbon cable into, that leads to the serial port.

As it a 5x2 pin arrangement I though I could just connect a standard ribbon cable in to it, then use a normal RS232 lead from there, but I’m not sure what the pinout is.

I’ve checked IBM’s website for manuals but there is nowhere to download the PDF. I contacted IBM, who led me round and round in circles to pages about FORTRAN compilers, and to pages about other servers, and I gave up eventually.

I’ve searched thru the AIX FAQ, this website so this is my last hope!

If this is the wrong place to post about problems like this, can some kind person point me in the right direction?

Also I know someone who has a graphics adaptor that may work for this machine. Its MCA but it has a weird connector, Instead of the 13W3 connector used by SUN, SGI, etc, it just has 3 coax connections in a D shell. Does anyone know what this connector is called so I can find some kind of adaptor?

What you need is a null-modem cable. Here is the pinout I used with success. I have multiple AIX systems and use a windows laptop as a console with terminal software. I also use isoft terminal servers:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connect an AIX console to a PC for hyper terminal use

DB9 Female (DTE) DB9 Female (DTE)
3 XMT or TD -- 2 XMT or TD
2 RCV or RD -- 3 RCV or RD
7 RTS -- 8 CTS
8 CTS -- 7 RTS
5 GND -- 5 GND
6 DSR -\- 4 DSR
1 DCD -/
/- 6 DCD
4 DTR -\- 1 DTR

Connect an AIX console to an iSoft terminal server

Expected pinout for RJ45:
1 RNG/CTS
2 DTR
3 XMT
4 XMTGND
5 RCVGND
6 RCV
7 DSR/DCD
8 RTS

DB9 Female RJ45 MALE
2 RCV or RD -- 3 XMT
3 XMT or TD -- 6 RCV
4 DTR -- 7 DSR
5 GND -- 4 GND
6 DSR -- 2 DTR
7 RTS -- 1 CTS
8 CTS -- 8 RTS

Try #2

Sorry for that, the formatting was lost in the cut-paste. Here is the pinout again with proper format (makes it easier!):

3 --> 2
2 --> 3
7 --> 8
8 --> 7
5 --> 5
6 and 1 --> 4
4 --> 6 and 1

The three coax connectors in the D shell is for IBM CGA. I've been unable to find anything that will work with it at all...

'Gee! You really sound serious about this. Your 7013 is circa 1990 to maybe 1993. I don't think you will be able to fabricate the "pigtail" end for S1/S2= you need the pigtail. ASCii only. The CGA monitor will require a seperate adapter(forget it!) This primarily is a business, menu driven machine, not GUI the way you may think. I may have the pigtail and maybe the nullmodemcable(TTY) . You can have them if they are still here. Do you have a CD reader(cartridge type) , and what kind of drives= 3.5 or 5.25? Did you get media with it? mike
