Making a dumb terminal go fullscreen

Hello,
I recently got a IBM RS6000 604e 43p Model 140 for free from someone in my UUG.

It came with AIX 5.1L on CD, Floppies, and it included all the documentation.

My main system is a Slackware Linux box, so I bought a null-modem serial cable to hook it up. That much is working, I'm using MiniCom and I can login fine.

My issue is the ability to use fullscreen programs. Mainly VI secondly SMIT.
SMIT will not open at all and VI shows like one line at a time, I cannot edit any files with it.

My TERMTYPE per echo is 'dumb', I cannot change it that I know of.
In MiniCom, I have tried VT102 and ANSI, no difference.

I chatted with one of the UNIX Admins at work and het let me borrow his AIX 5L Administration book (McGraw Hill). I've looked in that book and through the original documentation, I don't know how to change the term type.

I was lucky to get the documentation because it had the baud rate, bit length, etc in it.
Does anyone have some points as to where I can start to be able to use fullscreen apps through MiniCom?

Thanks,
-Jason

term

You can set your term type like this:
export TERM=vt100

I use vt100 just fine with minicom to aix. only thing that doesnt work
is F1-F4, but you can hit Escape-1 to simulate F1.

Set term type permanently with: smitty tty
change tty0 (or whatever) from dumb to vt100.

You may have to Change Save to DB only=Y, and log out and back in.
Happy AIX-ing! Here's some handy aix links:
