Installation issue with 5.2 and bash

I've got a fresh BOS install of 5.2 on a F50. I verified the xlC software installed cleanly from the BOS.

I downloaded bash from the UCLA site and in running the configure script i get the following:
# ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... rs6000-ibm-aix
Beginning configuration for bash-2.01
checking for gcc... (cached) cc
checking whether the C compiler (cc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot creat
e executables

Any help would be appreciated......

export CC=xlC
export cc=xlc

try checking the config log and see if you can get the statement that is being run to cause the failure. Often I'll run configure with -x on for debug and see exactly what compile statement is failing. Then run the statement yourself and reproduce the error.

Try downloading the c compiler vac.C fileset and install using the following command
installp -acgvXY -d <path> <fileset>
