AIX "remote login" & virtualization

Good Day,

Very basic questions.

1-Going through the manual I didn't see any SSH topic instead I saw telnet. Is that the only way to login to AIX servers? No secure way?

2- I believe AIX can't run on main frame in virtual environment ?

Thanks

Hello, I don't know what version of AIX you are using but I found an article on IBM's website talking about openSSH and AIX. Sounds like you may have to install it yourself.

What do you mean by 'can't run on mainframe in virtual environment'?
Do you mean AIX can't run in a virtual machine on a mainframe or that AIX can't be a 'host' for virtual machine's to run under?

I would be hard pressed to believe AIX doesn't support virtual machines on mainframes since IBM pioneered virtualization by including it in their mainframes 20+ years ago! However, I am no expert so I could be wrong. I will ask my Dad tomorrow (he's AIX expert) and get back to you.

Hello again. I asked my Dad about your virtual machine question. He said that technically, AIX does not run on mainframes any longer (it used to); IBM uses special OS's (sometimes UNIX) to run on their mainframes. He said you may be thinking of IBM's p-series hardware since they can get quite big and they do run AIX.

Anyways, AIX can run as both a host and guest in virtual environments. However, the only way to run AIX as guest is to run it under an AIX host using IBM's LPAR technology and hardware that has IBM's hypervisor support, etc. LPAR is IBM's version of virtual machines.

Thanks crc123

I am familiar with LPAR/VM/P-serious.
I did contract with IBM. We had linux servers running on LPAR and VM use to do the house keeping.

I just had this interview and for that I needed to know a bit of AIX. I did learn command line on AIX for interview but I didn't want to look stupid not knowing what hardware AIX ran on.

I did well on interview.
AIX usually runs on powerpc(processor) on IBM's RS6000 mahcines.

Thanks for your help.

And Thaks for getting back with answer. :-)

very urgent Strange problem on AIX

Hello Dear Friends
I am a researcher and using supercomputer on AIX.
Last day I had a very strange problem and now I am not able to see all of my 6 month data.
I ran my three calculations (namely S1, S2, and S3) successfully using mpi script. The calculations were running for S1, S2, and S3 and I wanted to edit S3 for further calculations. As I did editing in mpi for S3 calculations, then I was not able to save the changes and it was giving me a message that mpi file doesn't exist. I thought that I got disconnected and quit without saving. As I closed the mpi file, I found that I was not disconnected but all my data is disappeared. Meanwhile the calculations were running for S1, S2, and S3 and after sometime (a minute) the calculations for S3 stopped for which I was editing mpi file.
Now there is no data in my directory.
I didn't delete any thing. Keep in mind that I have very huge data and it will take very long time to delete my data, but it happened within few seconds which means some problem occurred on machine.
I will be very thnkful, if some one let me know that how to solve this problem. I didn't delete my data, but I am not able to see any thing. Every thing disappeared from folder except one file.
I asked the Engineer, but he is unable to solve this problem.
So help me in this regard.
Thnx
