Linux firmware in 4MLinux 22.1 (and later).

4MLinux 22.1 introduces a new way how the Linux firmware is handled by the 4MLinux Live CD (or Live USB).

1) Modern machines.
4MLinux loads the full set of the Linux firmware (ca 200 MB), making it available out of the box. Among other things, this means better support for modern Ethernet and WiFi cards.

2) Old machines.
During the boot 4MLinux checks how much RAM is available. If it is less than 1200 MB, the full set of the Linux firmware (mentioned in point 1) is deleted and replaced with 10x smaller package optimized for older hardware.

The above explains why the 4MLinux ISO image is now significantly bigger (additional firmware), but the minimum requirements to run the CD/USB are untouched.

problem with USB ports on 3 last versions of 4MLinux

Reporting problem with USB ports detection on 3 last versions of 4MLinux:

In all versions - the Tasks info (on right bottom on desktop) shows PID that "usb_storage" is running after USB flash drive has been plugged ... but:
v.21.x - OK, plugged/unplugged USB discs does show up and works
v.22.0-beta - OK, plugged/unplugged USB discs does show up and works
v.22.0 - NO, plugged/unplugged USB discs doesn´t show up at all (not in /dev/, not in /media/, not in pcman file-manager)
v.22.1 - NO, plugged/unplugged USB discs doesn´t show up at all (not in /dev/, not in /media/, not in pcman file-manager)
v.23.0-beta - NO, plugged/unplugged USB discs doesn´t show up at all (not in /dev/, not in /media/, not in pcman file-manager)

Tested on 4 different PCs/NTBs, each with 3-4 USB ports (v.2, v.3), tested with the 4 kinds of USB flash drives 4-32GB + with 2 different USB extern.2.5" discs 1+2TB.
Tested LiveCD.iso, downloaded od 2-3 different machines/net connections, burned on different machines onto 3 CDs, 2 DVDs, and 3 USB flash drives created with unetbootin and Yumi. To avoid wrong iso or wrong CD or wrong DVD or wrong USB flash disc.
After boot 4MLinux Live ISO on machine - tested plug/unplug USBs are not the same with booting USBs.
(´cos I keep my working old CDs, DVDs, booting USBs).

Hi,

I will answer you, but please start a new topic with a correct title (e.g. "problem with my USB drive"). Your question has nothing to do with the Linux firmware :-)
