continue to use good old xv (and of course ds9 for astronomical images)

Viewnior. Simple, easy-to-use.....what more could you ask for?
And occasionally gThumb, for "awkward" stuff like the new .webp image format, which is becoming more & more common. Most viewers don't yet handle this one...

I would have expected xv or sxiv... but since they are old or no more maintained (despite working both very well), may I suggest nsxiv ?

The list is missing display.

I use it so often – as it is my default in many situations – that I had to reflect on the issue and now am surprised.

My vote goes to ImageMagick/display – for completeness.

I thought I already commented something along these lines, but apparently I didn't.
There's also qiv, pqiv, vimiv, gliv, tiv...
