Welcome to the 2018 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards. The categories have been chosen, the nominees have been posted and I'm happy to announce that the polls are now open. If you have any suggestions for additions or modifications to poll nominees, please post in the thread for the poll in question. Any general suggestions should be posted in this thread.

A couple comments:

* We do realize that some polls have nominees that are not directly comparable. There are over 35 polls. If we got down to the granularity some members would like to see, there would be 100's if not 1000's of polls. That would be a net decline in the usefulness of the awards IMHO. We try to strike the best balance we can, and do modify the polls and nominees every year, based on feedback. If you have any suggestions on how the polls can be improved, do let us know.

* There are no set in stone guidelines for voting. Our recommendation is to base your vote on which application you found most valuable to you in 2018, along with which project you feel made the largest improvements in 2018. That being said, in the end the criteria is up to you.

* Posting a comment is optional, but do be aware that for your vote to count you have to select an option and click the "Vote Now" button (regardless of whether you have left a comment or not).

* You must have at least one post to be able to vote.

* All polls will close on February 12th at 12PM LQST.

* Results are not available until after the polls close.

I know this site is mainly about Linux, but I was wondering given that we do have the *BSD, etc forums here too; could there be a category for non-Linux related things? Like say for an example, the "BSD Distribution of the Year" or similar?

Do the MCA's have to be just Linux related?

I realize it's probably not possible to do something like that for the current MCA's, but thought I'd suggest it for next year.

I generally support this suggestion, especially as there is no BSDQuestions forum (although the world could need one). But "BSD distribution of the year" would be too complicated to explain, probably, as there is no clear distinction between "BSD systems" and "BSD distributions", not respecting the fact that the "D" meant "distribution" once.

While all modern BSDs are "distributions" of a version of 4.4BSD-*, there are important differences:

• Darwin (iOS/macOS/watchOS/tvOS) is a BSD distribution with a different kernel. Does it count?
• Free/Net/Open/DragonFly BSD are all descendants of 386BSD. Are they systems or distributions?
• If they are distributions: FreeNAS, GhostBSD, Trident, TrueOS and the PlayStation's Orbis OS are all distributions of the FreeBSD system. Are they distributions of distributions?

"BSD of the Year" would be a less wrong title, but one should still make sure that there are clear rules what counts as "a BSD".

Perhaps to avoid confusion, it could be called something like "Other *nix of the Year", or similar?

Because there is also the Solaris, AIX forums too. That way it could include not just the BSD's, but other *nix systems/distributions as well. Because correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, Solaris either ain't BSD or ain't directly related to it. I once again can't say for sure (because I haven't checked), but that's what I'm thinking anyways.
