Open Source Game of the Year

What's your favorite Open Source game?

Battle for Wesnoth turn-based beautiful fantasy-themed strategy because it has wonderful community and amazing online multiplayer experience! Also really convenient to develop for, has lots of excellent game-exchanging addons and my friend even made one of them :)

lm8 01-10-2019 08:28 AM

Love to see some other games added to this list. There are so many more great options that aren't listed. What about jooleem, anagramarama, scramble, hangman, Emilia pinball, dual-n-back, drac, lpairs, tuxmath, pong, eremit, starlanes, concentration, torrent, qubix, fltkmm, sopwith, ace of penguins, wordsearch, npuzzle. I'm sure I've left many other good ones out of the list. Would be interested to hear what other people's favorites are besides those already mentioned.

jeremy 01-10-2019 09:22 AM

There is room for additional options if any members have specific suggestions of Open Source Games they feel are truly excellent.

I usually vote for Frozen Bubble, that game is LITERALLY addictive!

And so, in order to break from this I've changed to a really fun TUX RACER, that is so much fun, reminds me of some old racing games I played way back years and years ago.

But I do love some Solitaire and other card games.

linustalman 01-10-2019 11:04 AM

I love RTS and FPS games so the choice was a tough one. 0 A.D. edged it for me.

racer24 01-10-2019 11:31 AM

I may be seriously showing my age however I still play Rogue :) hehe first computer game I ever tried.... was supposed to be learning Pascal at the time lol

bsdgames-nonfree is the package :)

Rogue is available as its own package. I've been asking it be added for years, along with Moria, Hack, Larn, Angband, UltraLarn, ZAngband, Linley's Dungeon Crawl (the classic,) PernAngband/ToME, TomeNET. I'd vote Moria or a derivative (all the rest except Hack, *Larn, Linley's Dungeon Crawl.)

What's the best Tetris clone?
What's the best Arkanoid clone?
What's the best Space Invaders clone?
What's the best Galaga or Galaxian clone?
What's the best Defender clone?

I might be convinced to vote for some such game over Moria/*band/ToME*

s.verma 02-02-2019 02:51 AM

Always loved Nexuiz. Xonotic is similar and I have played and loved them both, but if Nexuiz was a choice I would vote for it over Xonotic.

Hi s.verma. Good point. Hey Jeremy - why is Nexuiz not a choice?

It appears the most recent version of the open source "Nexuiz Classic" was released in 2009. Xonotic is a fork that is maintained and is in the poll.

Fair enough. Thanks.

Can I vote for Tales of Middle-earth (ToME2,) please?

All nominees in this category must be open source.

Damn it, everything I've ever suggested for years is Free/Libre/Opensource Software, but you've totally ignored me in all categories, and I don't know why. Look.
I'll leave Hack (which NetHack on your list is derived from,) Larn, UltraLarn, Linley's Dungeon Crawl (which Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup on your list is derived from,) ZAngband (derived from Angband,) for you to find (as I don't want to vote for them so much) but you can see I'm correct so far...

Hi dchmelik. What's your favorite of all of the ascii rogue-like games?

It fluctuates between Rogue (which I still think would be easy to win) and Moria (which I can't win without cheating) or more complex derivatives like Angband, or (because of overworld maps) ZAngband, or (because it has Middle-earth) ToME. But I could boil that down to Rogue or (since they changed the name but built on the same code) Moria/Angband/ZAngband/ToME... I mean, the latter could've been the same game if the Moria maintainer decided to add that all (maybe not ZAngband but later different Angband variants had the overhead map, including maybe ones based on Arda.)

I like ToME. I also like the GUI one Nethack.

jeremy 02-05-2019 04:10 PM

dchmelik,

ToME has been added. Note that if you search for "Tales of Middle-earth" that games does not come up in the early results, but another (definitely not open source one) does. Always helpful to include a link in the initial suggestion.

Okay, sorry it took a while to link.

The reason I finally asked with the full name of the game (then also the networked version) is that there are now two different games called ToME. They're by the same person, but DarkGod ended Tales of Middle-earth because he believed he might get sued, though never did (neither did the people making the source games of it, Moria and Angband, places on Middle-earth, for decades.) He renamed ToME Tales of Maj'Eyal.

I don't even consider Tales of Maj'Eyal roguelike, and don't like it. That's why my vote is specifically for Tales of Middle-earth (tome2) or TomeNET (the networked one is based on Middle-earth only.)

Below is what ToME used to mean.
  • ToME1: Troubles of Middle-earth
  • ToME2: Tales of Middle-earth
  • ToME3: experimental engine
  • ToME4: Tales of Maj'Eyal (not related to original)
However now DarkGod decreased the version numbering of v4 to v1, so it's now even more ambibuous what 'ToME' means

Paulo2 02-05-2019 09:06 PM

SuperTuxKart. They did a great job with 0.9.x version and there is a beta with network multiplayer.

pc.maint 02-06-2019 07:22 AM

Best game is not listed...

Oolite (nee Elite) is the best game ever produced for any computer...

I think Crawl-Tiles is also excellent - has ascii and GUI versions.

Brogue is another nice one.
not saying it's my favorite, though.
i'm also not sure how gameplay differs from rogue itself, but it looks amazing and is fun to play. prepare to die often.

Hi Jeremy. I did not ask it to be added - I was just conversing with dchmelik about rogue-like games. But I see no harm in it being added. To be honest, I can see loads of more open-source games that could make a future list.

linustalman 02-07-2019 04:18 AM

Hey Jeremy. Would you consider open-source games that work in Wine or do they have to be native open-source Linux games.

They should be native Linux games.

Hey Jeremy. Here's more suggestions for the list (or maybe add to next years list):

Alpha0 02-08-2019 06:36 AM

Hi all, first post here. For me, Oolite is probably the most underrated open source game project and it deserves much more praise and recognition than it gets, so it's great to see it amongst the nominees. My vote goes to it.

Hey Jeremy.

Here's more suggestions for the poll (I can download all or most in Debian 9 via Synaptic):

Damocles-Edge 02-10-2019 01:35 PM

For me it has to be Oolite

linustalman 02-13-2019 09:49 AM

Appreciate the research. That said, what we're generally looking for in MCA suggestions are well curated nominees that you are vouching for. "I think this $game is the best because $reason." A list of 20+ games with no context isn't likely to result in them all just being added.

I'm glad Oolite made it to the list.

Ok. I will whittle it down to my 3 favorites from the list with reasons:

Kobo Deluxe - Addictive action packed space shooter.
SolarWolf - Fast paced action game where you collect items whilst avoiding heavy enemy fire.
Zaz - Excellent Zuma clone.

Perhaps others will see my full list and vouch for some more of them for next years poll.

Cheers.

I missed this one by a mile! lol.

It's old.. But I hope FreedroidRPG makes the list to vote on this year! :)

dchmelik 06-08-2019 11:02 PM

Thanks for adding the ToME2 (Moria/Angband variant) roguelike game, but as I said, the author of that made a completely new game with the same abbreviation, and now has restarted the version numbering. What I requested and voted for was Troubles/Tales of Middle-earth (Troubles was v1; Tales was continued, v2) which is continued in a main fork of the final abbreviation on Github (tome2, also what I voted for.) However the new game (which I don't like) is Tales of Maj'eyal, which was ToME4, but now is renumbered to be a duplicate ToME1 and will probably later be a duplicate ToME2... so next year, let's have the full game name listed out to avoid potential confusion at that time or in the future.
