Video Media Player of the Year
What's your preferred app for watching video?
--jeremy |
I voted for VLC, but I also like the SMPlayer front end for MPlayer.
Voted for Myth again as I use it for TV and videos/dvds mainly. I occasionally us VLC.
I picked Totem because it is usually what I use, but I also always load VLC for any "problem" files to play.
mpv - watch videos without X!
Plex?

VLC because it works on all my devices
mpv fanboy here.
it's the best thing that's happened to desktop linux in the last decade if you ask me. keep it up devs! |
VLC is the only one that plays almost everything I throw at it.
Totem, actually.
xine. Easy, fast and supports easy custom key bindings.
vlc is a good second, but it takes longer to start |
MPV
vlc
QMPlay2
VLC.
(s)mplayer
smplayer.
mplayer cause I can run it directly from the console without a gui
ook@zzz:~$ mplayer dvd://1 Idk if the others can do this or not - it works for me and I'm too lazy to bother looking at anything else |

VLC plays anything I need.
I use umplayer (I know, it's a dinosaur) but if I had to use something current I'd use SMplayer.
Shame smplayer isn't on here , but its only a front end for mplayer I suppose.
I don't know why VLC gets so much acclaim, try and watch a 4k UHD movie with it. It doesn't use any multithreading.

mpv is able to do this too. |
I picked mpv because I use it, I think it's great, and I recently figured out its ffmpeg filters.
Will try smplayer and qmplay2 this year. |
I used mplayer in the past.
Nowadays, it's VLC for me. |

each and every (s|u|gnome-|etc.)mplayer voter here should try out mpv.
it is essentially a fork of mplayer, and has been under very intense development for the last couple of years. it is _far_ superior to mplayer, and equally lightweight. btw, smplayer can use it as a backend. i really hope it will win this poll, and if not now, next year. |

Switched from VLC to SMPlayer a couple of years ago. Just found MPV, with which I am most impressed.....plays absolutely everything you can think of.
