I voted for VLC, but I also like the SMPlayer front end for MPlayer.

petelq 01-03-2018 12:34 PM

Voted for Myth again as I use it for TV and videos/dvds mainly. I occasionally us VLC.

bigiron45 01-03-2018 02:23 PM

I picked Totem because it is usually what I use, but I also always load VLC for any "problem" files to play.

anticapitalista 01-03-2018 03:05 PM

mpv - watch videos without X!

Habitual 01-03-2018 03:11 PM

Plex?

I second this, voted VLC but would have voted for SMPlayer if offered.

gilead 01-03-2018 07:16 PM

VLC because it works on all my devices

ondoho 01-04-2018 04:58 AM

mpv fanboy here.

it's the best thing that's happened to desktop linux in the last decade if you ask me.

keep it up devs!

chal 01-04-2018 08:39 AM

VLC is the only one that plays almost everything I throw at it.

YesItsMe 01-04-2018 08:42 AM

Totem, actually.

Tux! 01-04-2018 10:20 AM

xine. Easy, fast and supports easy custom key bindings.
vlc is a good second, but it takes longer to start

rokytnji 01-04-2018 04:05 PM

MPV

_roman_ 01-04-2018 10:00 PM

vlc

RadicalDreamer 01-04-2018 11:55 PM

QMPlay2

trosdejos 01-05-2018 02:13 AM

VLC.

weirdwolf 01-14-2018 08:30 PM

(s)mplayer

anon026 01-20-2018 01:57 AM

smplayer.

Ook 01-22-2018 01:59 PM

mplayer cause I can run it directly from the console without a gui

ook@zzz:~$ mplayer dvd://1

Idk if the others can do this or not - it works for me and I'm too lazy to bother looking at anything else

This^

rowo 01-24-2018 04:13 PM

VLC plays anything I need.

sombragris 01-29-2018 11:40 AM

I use umplayer (I know, it's a dinosaur) but if I had to use something current I'd use SMplayer.

nattydread69 02-02-2018 06:42 AM

Shame smplayer isn't on here , but its only a front end for mplayer I suppose.

nattydread69 02-02-2018 06:51 AM

I don't know why VLC gets so much acclaim, try and watch a 4k UHD movie with it. It doesn't use any multithreading.

mpv is able to do this too.

dugan 02-02-2018 01:48 PM

I picked mpv because I use it, I think it's great, and I recently figured out its ffmpeg filters.

Will try smplayer and qmplay2 this year.

VamosBaby 02-03-2018 08:34 AM

I used mplayer in the past.

Nowadays, it's VLC for me.

Yeah, with no smplayer I'm not voting for any of them

ondoho 02-07-2018 12:18 AM

each and every (s|u|gnome-|etc.)mplayer voter here should try out mpv.
it is essentially a fork of mplayer, and has been under very intense development for the last couple of years. it is _far_ superior to mplayer, and equally lightweight.

btw, smplayer can use it as a backend.

i really hope it will win this poll, and if not now, next year.

Actually now that you mentioned it I have tried it and I can't remember having any complaints. I didn't explore too much on its capabilities, I just thought it had too few features, but maybe I should give it a try again.
Thanks

wjones42 02-07-2018 05:07 PM

Mplayer

Switched from VLC to SMPlayer a couple of years ago. Just found MPV, with which I am most impressed.....plays absolutely everything you can think of.

Mike. ;)

it also integrates youtube-dl, so anything you can download with it, you can instead pass the link to mpv and it plays it directly.
