Can't really decide, since I'm not satisfied with any file manager I've used so far.

While I typically use caja, simply because it's the default one and it works for basic tasks, it's bad when I want to synchronize/compare directories.

I've looked at split-panel managers, such as Gnome Commander, but they're bad when working with pictures, photos (no preview) and they tend to look ugly. Also it's nice to have the option of seeing a tree view of directory structures, which these usually don't have.

Is there any file manager that can show files as a list, miniatures, or tree, and is still useful when trying to compare/synchronize directories?

_________
EDIT: Ok, I looked around and found that Krusader changed considerably since last time I used it. It might actually have what I need. In brief mode with max zoom in things like komparing two photo galleries are actually doable, although it could still be more efficient with screen estate usage.

i believe most file managers have a dual pane option.
i know pcmanfm has.
in feature-richness and configurability, i think spacefm is nr.1.

PCManFM. Not sure it's the best by any means, but I like it and works good enough for me.

Give Doublecmd a look. You have a lot of configuration options for look, default terminal, etc.; photo previews; file viewing and editing. It is not the lightest, but may be lighter than Krusader, and has a lot of tools. There is a gtk version, but I have found it can tend to hang up, but no problem with the Qt version.

Thunar is great, but they have not fixed yet a 2 year old bug that makes it crash on file moves and renames. Voted for the Midnight Commander, which is always great!

thanks for the tip with the qt version.
but as someone previously pointed out, it's not exactly lightweight.
i just can't have that in a filemanager, i need instant pop up when i start the app.
also, there's a windows version? for a file manager?

if you claim something like that, you MUST provide the version you are refering to!!! and preferably a link to the bug report.

Unfortunately, that's a quite well known bug, and I think it affects any version in the last 2 years! Launchpad is offline now, but in emails I have digged https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1512120

I starting using both vifm and pcmanfm this year. I voted for vifm, but it was a tough choice.

thank you.
i am just trying to prevent rumours about bugs.
if i may criticize you (a little): this bug has been filed 1 year and 2 months ago, not 2 years.

incidentally, i agree with you about thunar.

I chose PCmanFM as I've found it suits my needs regardless of the window manager/environment I'm using. I've used Thunar with Xfce, but when I'm using a window manager, I like to leave as much of the desktop environment behind as I can. It's almost like I'm running a more pute session if I rely on non-environment associated applications with my window manager.

PCManFM, as it CONSISTENTLY recognizes the other Linux and Windoz partitions on my multiboot systems. Many of the others don't, at least OOTB. I also like Thunar as implemented in MX16, but I installed PCManFM in addition to Thunar.

I got introduced to SpaceFM through the Slackware forum recently. It will probably be my pick for next year.

mc is second to none in regards of speed.
Be it in lower runlevels, on X or through a serial protocol, you get an convenient and tweakable interface.
Are you up to copy, compare or explore files and directories, mc won't let You down. What isn't there is easily added via user menus.
And then the remote protocol support:
-ftp
-samba
-ssh
and possibly more...
Had it support for any sort of thumbnail preview, i think even bat-man would use it :D
