Don't know many of the choices, but happy enough with XChat

Thanks to those mentioning irssi -- I had used a command-line client which was overly complex for my needs and seemed tricky to set up but I just installed irssi and it just works.
I may have to vote for it next year.

What I like abour irssi, beyond being CLI, is that it is so well supported, many perl scripts out there. Add Screen to the mix and it is very customizable, but is nice as is for a new user...

XChat may have won it this year, but with Slackware having switched to HexChat in current and MX Linux also including it, it looks like HexChat will be favored to win it next year.

I thought xchat was discontinued, as far as updates etc...I switched to hexchat.
