Since you mentioned it, I decided to give spring one more go. Now I remember why I deleted it, ~with extreme prejudice~, the first time. It never has and never will work first time out of the box ...with at least one sorry stinking example game there for you to try. There is no lucid step-through from install to downloading a game that I could find and the difference between "game" and "map". I cannot get the Spring client to do much of anything, even after creating a login and password, then logging in and using the password. No downloads show up.

OTOH, maybe I Just Don't Get It. But, I don't like games I don't just get, out of the box.

OK, to be fair, I finally found it. http://springrts.com/wiki/Finalizing_linux_install

You DO have to grind through page after page to find it though. I'm currently downloading DeltaSeigeDry which has stalled at 33%. Grrrr.... if it doesn't continue within 5 minutes, I'll try another. Ric

@wayward4now
y, i also went some ways before getting it to work

the simplest one is to dl springlobby then, after the login and stuff, click to spectate a game

and ye, the downloader seems to stall sometimes but it still downloads
funny that the maps can be bigger then the whole game

that said i played mostly against bots since most of the, not many, people playing are hardcore
it's still a lot of fun though

I actually played through Ur Quan Masters this year. Of course it's my pick.

I voted for SuperTuxKart. It is one of my favorites but I also voted for it because this year they made huge improvements! This month they released the 0.8.2 beta (final to be out in Jan) and it's way better, huge graphics improvements and many new features.

Freeciv is good albeit behind the times in graphics.
Minetest - like it - but bugs. Lots of bugs
0 A.D. - Haven't played it much and I forgot why
Open Arena - Never been impressed. Nice 3d environment but don't like the gameplay (Maybe I don't like the genre)
OpenTTD - simple but can be addicting
Neverball - again simple but addicting

The only one I play is Freedoom/PrBooM, not listed, 2-3 times a year.

That's a game engine, not a game.

I'm pretty sure that to be eligible for this list, a game has to have both open source code and open source assets (artwork, music, etc).

It uses the Freedoom IWAD (which is a DOOM WAD) But that's how I have it listed, but yeah, when you start it it comes up as Freedoom. I have the original DOOM IWADS on disk for "The Ultimate Doom" and "Doom 2", but the one from my repo works just as well though so I haven't bothered ripping the other IWADS from the CD's.

I like and play a fair selection of the listed games, but the thing that I do use daily is a game compendium of 32 games and puzzles by Simon G Tatham (SGT).
The page is here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/
It's not for everyone, but you do get a lot of carefully crafted and properly documented games in around a 1MB download.
Floats my boat!

Is it too late for it to be added, please?

For me it's glitchy on my older desk top but not the newer lap top.
