Open Source Game of the Year
What's your favorite Open Source Game?
--jeremy |
NetHack - that's the only open-source game I play these days (+ Minecraft)
What about GNU Backgammon ? Again - i am too late.
I chose Xonotic, with Open Arena as a close second. Just about the only thing missing from Xonotic is maps, though the stock ones are very good. I also like Open Arena because there are packages available for several distros and it runs good on dated hardware.
Um.... Like I would have any idea whatsoever LOL.
spring rts ? minetest ? pioneer ?
i'm sure there are a great many more excellent games out, not on the list so far. a quick search around "top ten games of 2012" and the like, will no doubt find handfulls of blogs and articles rich in other awesome suggestions. the list to vote for up there looks a bit 2005ish. there are new open source games out there... they just dont get the advertising budget. idk. i've stopped caring about all games, since the news we could be getting elite4 in early 2014. ~highly unlikely to be opensourced, but quite probably on linux at some point. ... so long as we keep making sure braben knows there's big demand for it. elite:dangerous, on kickstarter. :) make it so. |
Pioneer and Minetest have been added.

Loved XCOM. UFO: Alien Invasion it is! :-D
Can we add stepmania? It's both open source and available for linux natively.
StepMania has been added.

What? No Enemy Territory. :(

*sigh*
If only ET still ran properly on most modern Linuxes (without having to do so serious "tweaking"). Other players to shoot would also be a plus. :-D A victim of insufficient library/whatever standards, I suspect. *ducks for cover* |
I'm running ET on Kubuntu 12.04, so no problem with that. Only problem I have is sound, but I blame that on a still immature sound system on linux.

What's your favorite Open Source Game?

I'm not going to vote because I haven't gotten to try most of the games recently. (I don't have hardware acceleration so 3D games are out.) I recently enjoyed playing pingus, with all the new levels from the 0.7.6 release. Warzone 2100 was an awesome game when I tried it out last year; I hear it is under active development with a recent 3.1 beta release. Anybody given that a try yet?

my Linux Game of the year
not OpenSource Dungeons of Dredmor - shame very good oldschool favor nethack :) Hazeron (hazeron.com) - quite good SPACE EMPIRE mmo.. a few steps in right direction and could be next privateer/X3/tachyoon. Xenonauts - promising ufo series spin-off OpenSource OpenTTD - voted :) Precipcle of Drakness(??) and Trine - i think it was some part of humble bundle with sources, games that give a good view on native gaming in linux and thu not be forgotten. .. i haven't time to check state of older ports(GemRB etc) and new games this year.. + a few linux game sources where closed or outdated(getdeb/some game managers etc..).. i hope 2013 will be better :). |
I'm surprised noone has said Fuego or GNUGo. I thought Linux users liked wéiqí, but maybe you are all chess players (i see GNUChess is there!).
Even though I pestered the admin to add TWM to another vote, I have to say Fuego. Your package manager is more likely to have GNUGo, but it hasn't been updated for a few years and Fuego is at least 10 stones stronger (using a Monte Carlo rather than heuristic algorithm). I only recognized Freeciv in that list anyway. Not that Freeciv is bad, but a computer player playing at >1 dan is amazing considering how complex the game is (a minimax search would be impossible on a 19x19 board, or take a million years, but I think it has been solved on 5x5 -- which is too small to be meaningful). A few years ago it would've been unthinkable. The Monte Carlo algorithm applied to computer wéiqí was a breakthrough that allowed them to increase in strength from low single digit kyu to dan level. Best part is it's LGPL and only requires some boost libraries. Works on Debian Squeeze. Happy new year. |
Wesnoth yesterday - Wesnoth today - Wesnoth forever.
Warsow, which is open source for the code, but not for the art assets, which are reserved for Warsow under license. That fact probably scares away potential Linux players . . .
PokerTH
I'm addicted to Texas Hold'em PokerTH.
Battle for Wesnoth. It's great all around. The first few missions are kind of slow, but the next few pick up the pace a bit so you can actually get into it. Another benefit is that it runs great on my not so awesome hardware.

Poor man's XCOM. :) Also I love this game because I have such slow hands. |
Urban Terror?
Super Maryo Chronicles if there was.
MegaMek, it uses the GNU license and is hosted on sourceforge! It will probably lose though, great unofficial battletech client. several different servers with different "themes" to play on.
Battle for Wesnoth
I haven't played any good first person shooter game on linux but played a lot in windows. Can anyone suggest me a good one ? |

So, I grab an older version and blow the stuffings out of the invading hordes, late at night. It's a terrific time waster when you're bored. I highly recommend it, and it plays very well as a single player against multiple AI's. Ric |
Nobody likes Enigma? That is my favorite.
I've never managed to find people to play with on Urban Terror. Is the community active at all?
I'm not voting in this category unless LSkat makes the ballot. It's a card game for KDE with plenty of strategy along with chance.
My vote goes for FlightGear
Why isn't The Mana World on the list?!

Voted for Open Arena, but where are Sauerbraten and Smokin' Guns?
SuperTuxKart 8 is awesome because it is alot like Mario Kart, but open source. (Which is a good thing, because I don't own Mario Kart!)
FlightGear is a great project. I wouldn't call it a game, but anyway, my vote goes for them.
Loved Pingus. Sad that no new levels since 2011. :(
Can't remember what I voted here (probably GNU Chess) but over the years Xmoto is always my favorite.
Pingus!
After you have solved every playable level the real challenge begins - going for absolute minimum time on the really tough ones! Surprises proliferate! And while not on the list or free (aka open source), I still indulge my Lemmings CD on Dosbox. You kids today don't know what fun is... |
LOL;
I like Pingus and Lemmings (still too although don't get around to using my floppies much these days,) not that I play much.
