Open Source Game of the Year

What's your favorite Open Source Game?

--jeremy

sycamorex 12-18-2012 03:13 AM

NetHack - that's the only open-source game I play these days (+ Minecraft)

LiNuXkOlOnIe 12-18-2012 04:07 AM

What about GNU Backgammon ? Again - i am too late.

PhoenixAndThor 12-18-2012 05:13 AM

I chose Xonotic, with Open Arena as a close second. Just about the only thing missing from Xonotic is maps, though the stock ones are very good. I also like Open Arena because there are packages available for several distros and it runs good on dated hardware.

tallship 12-18-2012 05:23 AM

Um.... Like I would have any idea whatsoever LOL.

Siljrath 12-18-2012 11:50 AM

spring rts ? minetest ? pioneer ?

i'm sure there are a great many more excellent games out, not on the list so far. a quick search around "top ten games of 2012" and the like, will no doubt find handfulls of blogs and articles rich in other awesome suggestions. the list to vote for up there looks a bit 2005ish. there are new open source games out there... they just dont get the advertising budget.

idk.

i've stopped caring about all games, since the news we could be getting elite4 in early 2014. ~highly unlikely to be opensourced, but quite probably on linux at some point. ... so long as we keep making sure braben knows there's big demand for it. elite:dangerous, on kickstarter. :) make it so.

jeremy 12-18-2012 12:10 PM

Pioneer and Minetest have been added.

DaneM 12-18-2012 09:40 PM

Loved XCOM. UFO: Alien Invasion it is! :-D

343 Guilty Spark 12-19-2012 09:46 PM

Can we add stepmania? It's both open source and available for linux natively.

jeremy 12-20-2012 09:43 AM

StepMania has been added.

Doesn't Enemy Territory have non-open-source components? Such as artwork?

DaneM 12-23-2012 03:15 PM

*sigh*

If only ET still ran properly on most modern Linuxes (without having to do so serious "tweaking"). Other players to shoot would also be a plus. :-D

A victim of insufficient library/whatever standards, I suspect.

*ducks for cover*

gdejonge 12-24-2012 12:18 AM

I'm running ET on Kubuntu 12.04, so no problem with that. Only problem I have is sound, but I blame that on a still immature sound system on linux.

What's your favorite Open Source Game?

hydraMax 12-28-2012 01:55 PM

I'm not going to vote because I haven't gotten to try most of the games recently. (I don't have hardware acceleration so 3D games are out.) I recently enjoyed playing pingus, with all the new levels from the 0.7.6 release. Warzone 2100 was an awesome game when I tried it out last year; I hear it is under active development with a recent 3.1 beta release. Anybody given that a try yet?

sunnydrake 12-29-2012 09:57 AM

my Linux Game of the year
not OpenSource
Dungeons of Dredmor - shame very good oldschool favor nethack :)
Hazeron (hazeron.com) - quite good SPACE EMPIRE mmo.. a few steps in right direction and could be next privateer/X3/tachyoon.
Xenonauts - promising ufo series spin-off
OpenSource
OpenTTD - voted :)
Precipcle of Drakness(??) and Trine - i think it was some part of humble bundle with sources, games that give a good view on native gaming in linux and thu not be forgotten.
..

i haven't time to check state of older ports(GemRB etc) and new games this year.. + a few linux game sources where closed or outdated(getdeb/some game managers etc..).. i hope 2013 will be better :).

Soderlund 12-29-2012 06:16 PM

I'm surprised noone has said Fuego or GNUGo. I thought Linux users liked wéiqí, but maybe you are all chess players (i see GNUChess is there!).

Even though I pestered the admin to add TWM to another vote, I have to say Fuego.

Your package manager is more likely to have GNUGo, but it hasn't been updated for a few years and Fuego is at least 10 stones stronger (using a Monte Carlo rather than heuristic algorithm).

I only recognized Freeciv in that list anyway. Not that Freeciv is bad, but a computer player playing at >1 dan is amazing considering how complex the game is (a minimax search would be impossible on a 19x19 board, or take a million years, but I think it has been solved on 5x5 -- which is too small to be meaningful). A few years ago it would've been unthinkable. The Monte Carlo algorithm applied to computer wéiqí was a breakthrough that allowed them to increase in strength from low single digit kyu to dan level.

Best part is it's LGPL and only requires some boost libraries. Works on Debian Squeeze.

Happy new year.

Wesnoth yesterday - Wesnoth today - Wesnoth forever.

Sylvester Ink 01-02-2013 09:09 PM

Warsow, which is open source for the code, but not for the art assets, which are reserved for Warsow under license. That fact probably scares away potential Linux players . . .

Wifi-Fanatux 01-06-2013 05:05 AM

PokerTH

I'm addicted to Texas Hold'em PokerTH.

Myk267 01-06-2013 09:48 PM

Battle for Wesnoth. It's great all around. The first few missions are kind of slow, but the next few pick up the pace a bit so you can actually get into it. Another benefit is that it runs great on my not so awesome hardware.

+1

Poor man's XCOM. :) Also I love this game because I have such slow hands.

gradinaruvasile 01-08-2013 09:22 AM

Urban Terror?

konsolebox 01-09-2013 10:53 AM

Super Maryo Chronicles if there was.

stoggy 01-09-2013 06:34 PM

MegaMek, it uses the GNU license and is hosted on sourceforge! It will probably lose though, great unofficial battletech client. several different servers with different "themes" to play on.

divyashree 01-10-2013 09:28 PM

Battle for Wesnoth

I haven't played any good first person shooter game on linux but played a lot in windows. Can anyone suggest me a good one ?

The latest version messed up the trucks. They are "polite" and don't jostle for position in order to build something. So, two trucks out of four might actually be building while the other two are stuck behind them. Yes, I have complained.

So, I grab an older version and blow the stuffings out of the invading hordes, late at night. It's a terrific time waster when you're bored. I highly recommend it, and it plays very well as a single player against multiple AI's. Ric

The Lightning Stalker 01-15-2013 07:48 PM

Nobody likes Enigma? That is my favorite.

DaneM 01-17-2013 07:08 AM

I've never managed to find people to play with on Urban Terror. Is the community active at all?

cowlitzslack 01-31-2013 02:08 AM

I'm not voting in this category unless LSkat makes the ballot. It's a card game for KDE with plenty of strategy along with chance.

etech3 01-31-2013 06:21 PM

My vote goes for FlightGear

JackDeth 01-31-2013 09:21 PM

Why isn't The Mana World on the list?!

The sad thing about that game is that to install it, you have to drag in KDE as well. So, it is a distro specific game, not just a linux game.

cjuerg 02-01-2013 03:36 AM

Voted for Open Arena, but where are Sauerbraten and Smokin' Guns?

GentooLinuxIsBetter 02-01-2013 02:06 PM

SuperTuxKart 8 is awesome because it is alot like Mario Kart, but open source. (Which is a good thing, because I don't own Mario Kart!)

Philip Lacroix 02-01-2013 04:21 PM

FlightGear is a great project. I wouldn't call it a game, but anyway, my vote goes for them.

zziggy 02-02-2013 11:27 AM

Loved Pingus. Sad that no new levels since 2011. :(

jamison20000e 12-20-2013 02:19 PM

Can't remember what I voted here (probably GNU Chess) but over the years Xmoto is always my favorite.

astrogeek 12-20-2013 02:28 PM

Pingus!

After you have solved every playable level the real challenge begins - going for absolute minimum time on the really tough ones! Surprises proliferate!

And while not on the list or free (aka open source), I still indulge my Lemmings CD on Dosbox.

You kids today don't know what fun is...

jamison20000e 12-20-2013 03:01 PM

LOL;

I like Pingus and Lemmings (still too although don't get around to using my floppies much these days,) not that I play much.

Yea, I suffer the same condition, not really much of a gamer. It just happens that I played Lemmings last night while waiting for ffmpeg to compile then saw this thread today. Glad there is another Pingus/Lemmings player out there though!
