Messaging Application of the Year

Which app do you prefer to keep in touch?

Irssi

tallship 12-18-2012 06:12 AM

I picked weechat.

I opened this thread knowing I was going to pick pidgin, but thought... hey I do like weechat. It's a real refreshing spin on the cli based IRC clients and it's on par with irssi.

But I really consider IC clients in a category all their own.

metalaarif 12-18-2012 08:41 AM

Pidgin is the best dudes

Siljrath 12-18-2012 11:40 AM

sad to say, but pidgin is still king here.

i agree that irc clients could really do with their own category... then i could be torn between erc, ii, and irssi.

huxingguidao 12-18-2012 06:19 PM

i am a newer for linux

i am newer for linux and i kown little about linux, but i think i must take part in the activity! i think may be the Irssi is the best one i used.

PhoenixAndThor 12-18-2012 07:04 PM

Pidgin in X, irssi in terminal

Poprocks 12-19-2012 03:05 PM

To me, none of these really stand out as being the best "of the Year" so I just picked my all-time favourite, Irssi.

spoovy 12-21-2012 12:11 PM

Telepathy / KDE telepathy need to be up there.

jeremy 12-21-2012 12:21 PM

KDE-Telepathy has been added.

Since I started using Jabber/XMPP more than IRC this year, I voted for Pidgin, but for IRC weechat is a great choice.

dronord 12-24-2012 07:22 AM

where qutim? it works even on Nokia N9.

redfox2807 12-28-2012 05:15 AM

Messages app for Nokia N9 has replaced any of those in the list for me =)

sunnydrake 12-29-2012 10:10 AM

Empathy for good integration with Gnome-Shell :)

decodedthought 12-31-2012 03:53 PM

use pidgin for IM purposes and irssi for irc ! :)

brashley46 12-31-2012 05:22 PM

Pidgin works for me but hardly any of my friends use IM any more.

What do they use instead?

Skype, twitter, identi.ca ...

digigold 01-02-2013 05:39 PM

Switched to Kopete from pidgin about six months ago. Haven't looked back since!

gradinaruvasile 01-08-2013 09:27 AM

Jitsi. Why its missing from the list? It has both voip and messaging capabilities like empathy/pidgin/etc...

jeremy 01-08-2013 10:25 AM

Jitsi has been added.

Kopete

I switched from Pidgin to Kopete as well. No brainer if you run KDE; however, since Kopete requires many of KDE's libraries, if you are using a different DE you may want to look elsewhere.

chrisretusn 01-16-2013 07:33 PM

Well it's Pidgin for me, running a close second is Kopete for it's video capability.

I know it listed in another category, but Skype also plays a role in my keeping in touch tool kit, I use it for messaging is addition to it's other features.

etech3 01-31-2013 06:48 PM

I use Pidgin the most.

dchmelik 01-31-2013 08:45 PM

no options such as Unix talk & write, etc., email? This list is skewed.

timsoft 02-04-2013 05:13 AM

what about thunderbird ? or should there be a catagory for email client separately?
