Desktop Distribution of the Year

I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I gave Linux Mint my vote for these reasons 1) The Linux Mint developers listen to their community and do their best to deliver. Hence the Cinnamon Desktop. From my perspective Ubuntu appears to be doing what Microsoft has been doing for years: deciding what their users want. Also with each Ubuntu release they remove functionality. 2) The horrible Unity Desktop. 3) Unlike Ubuntu they do not have a 'One size fits all' outlook regarding the Desktop. A PC is not a laptop, smartphone or a tablet.

Hi,
first post here and Linux user since 2005; I love Arch, Debian and Slack; on my PC I actually run both Arch-Xfce and Slack-KDE 14.0, the latter with KDE 4.9.5 from Alien Bob's repo (and a little OT but I have to say that this last KDE, at least with Slack, is amazingly stable and surprisingly fast, even with effects activated on a not so new machine); that said, if I have to choose, my slight preference goes to Arch, but it's an hard choice...

You may want to give Chakra a try. It's a fork of Arch that was customized and tweaked for KDE.

I voted Slackware. Honestly, the oldest and most tried and true distro needs more love.

Normally I stick with Arch here, but all the upgrade issues I've had with systemd have made me not vote for it, even though it's my main OS.

OpenSUSE really impressed me this year, slightly edging out Kubuntu.

I would have choosen: AntiX. Because of my old hardware. But it's not on the list. Perhaps it is a good idea to include OS for old computers as a separate category next year?

For me it will always be Slackware !!!
I recommend Ubuntu, or the lightweight Lubuntu, or Linux Mint to beginners who want to start using Linux.

Why is Zenwalk no longer one of the choices for desktop distro of the year? I know you can not possibly include every distro on the list, but Zenwalk was always among the choices in the last few years if I remember correctly. Zenwalk has always been one of my favorite distros. I am sorry to see that it did not even make the cut for this year's poll.

And where is SolusOS in the list? Not only is it keeping a sane Gnome 2 desktop available until a suitable replacement is ready, the team is actively developing a Gnome 2 like DE for Gnome 3. Based upon Debian by Ikey Doherty (the Team Leader) SolusOS is stable, lean and a delight to use.
