Correction - They are more than just scanners. You can do a lot more with them, but they are just publicly known as scanners.
Of course they are, nevertheless, I think that more than one tool deserve a credit here.

Indeed, but they're still not preventative tools.

I never said you did. I was making the point that your pedanticism doesn't affect my original argument.

I'm not arguing in the first place. And quite frankly, I don't even know what "pedanticism" means.... So technically, how do you know I'm doing that? (Not sure if that's even the right way to say it... LOL)

I never even suggested you were.

This is the 2nd time you've been defensive over an accusation that was never made.

Perhaps because I do know what it means ;)

Taken from Google define:
A pedant is a person who is overly concerned with formalism and precision, or who makes a show of their learning.

You were pedantic over my broad use of the term "scanners". Thus I was simply saying that you were correct in your point (re some are more than just scanners), but that it was also an irrelevant point when weighed up against the context of my original post (ie making the distinction between investigatory vs preventative solutions)

Essentially I'm just saying "Your point is true but irellevent"

Honestly, I wasn't being defensive at all, man. Didn't you notice the "LOL" above? :P

And my bad, it just came off wrong.

Cheers,

Josh

hahaha Sorry mate

Don't be sorry! Being sorry for yourself is a form of weakness. Well, to me it is anyway. It's just how you come off. Remember though, you can't express emotion over text, let-a-lone a forum. But it's all good though, man!

Wireshark

My vote went to Wireshark this year.

hans51 01-31-2012 10:35 PM

there might be other options to above listed or multiple used
and some are of different type like Intrusion detection, or scanner (nessus) or prevention

I use multiple simultaneously like apache mod_security2 + snort + nessus network scans " ClamAV + iptables + fail2ban

DaneM 02-01-2012 01:42 AM

Blocklist Manager, or Privacy Guard (for) Linux?

I would have put one of these two, but there's no option for them! :-( Nmap is pretty good, though.
