Messaging Application of the Year

Which app do you prefer to keep in touch? Note that VOIP apps have been broken out into a new category this year.

I voted for Gajim which I am not using :D I use massively GNU Emacs jabber-el mode

brashley46 01-03-2012 04:54 PM

I actually use the microbloggers more than the messagers ... Turpial and Choqok.

metalaarif 01-03-2012 08:07 PM

have been using pidgin for 4 yrs even in windows. it's the best

cuppsy 01-04-2012 08:50 AM

Voted for bitlbee, but I really use bitlbee/irssi in conjunction.

tallship 01-04-2012 05:06 PM

Hard call for actual categories...

Pidgin and X-Chat are always running on my workstation[s], yet Jitsi is what I would have picked from the list above, except that it is now in the VoIP category.

I use it along with Kamailio, as a Skype replacement (Skype is also a chat program - not necessarily VoIP - So there is a lot of cross-over between the categories).

I've been using Irssi for some time, but in the past used to herald BitchX and even ircii, from which BitchX was derived.

Nowadays, it seems that the 'next level' of console based irc clients is led by Irssi, which I run, but lately I've gotten into a slightly different, and perhaps even arguably better client, WeeChat - which is what I voted for.

WeeChat doesn't have to restart and completely extensible on the fly - something Irssi isn't.

The two behave similarly, but also differently, so migration between the two is relatively painless.

Anyway, that's my :twocents:

I hope that helps!

Kindest regards,

.

I do a similar thing, except with minbif and Quassel.

Minbif is basically bitlbee-type server, except it uses libpurple (Pidgen's APIs) so supports more protocols than bitlbee would.
Quassel is just a Qt IRC client.

I also have a ZNC set up (not sure if that falls into this category or not as while it is a messaging application - it's largely just a relay).

I voted Irssi though as that's my fall back when I'm not on my main laptop (and to be honest, I probably do prefer it to Quassel anyway - it's just Quassel integrates better into my DE)

ps_sabu 01-17-2012 12:32 PM

Pidgin

xev 01-19-2012 08:18 AM

Hard to choose one, console=Irssi/Finch and GUI=XChat/Pidgin. But, I'll vote for Irssi.

Thanks for letting me know about WeeChat. It's been about a week since I installed it and it feels really great. I'm considering about switching from Irssi (which served me well last year, hence I voted for it).

Hungry ghost 01-19-2012 05:12 PM

I use mostly Mercury Messenger (MSN client), but the linux version development seems to be stopped for more than one and a half years now, so I voted for Gyachi, which is what I use when I want to chat over Yahoo. BTW, Emesene is missing on the list :)

gbo 02-01-2012 03:37 PM

psi+ is the best))

gocrazymonkey 02-01-2012 04:25 PM

Empathy for most networks, but xchat for irc, which I'm on a lot of the time

Ahaaa 02-01-2012 05:34 PM

I used Pidgin briefly, until I realised it was storing my gmail password in plaintext. So I switched to Empathy.

savotije 02-06-2012 12:51 PM

Kopete

FeyFre 02-07-2012 03:57 PM

MirandaIM on Wine.
The same as last year. Otehr native clients *nix clients even not 10% powerful as MirandaIM on Wine.

Really?
What does MirandaIM do that other clients cannot?

Satyaveer Arya 02-08-2012 11:51 AM

Pidgin is good enough.

frieza 02-23-2012 04:55 PM
