teckk 12-21-2011 04:18 PM

mplayer

Please keep in mind the polls are not going to be open until next week. We're simply posting the nominees to get feedback before voting begins.

Banshee ... Just because the name is cool :) (Also I like almost all the features)

273 12-28-2011 04:23 PM

RhythmBox. Has playlists, album art, visualisations, "jukebox mode" :-), and other things I associate with a versatile audio player but isn't a bloated mess like Amarok (OK, little bit of bitterness there).

chrisretusn 12-28-2011 07:59 PM

I like and use Amarok.

Juk is a nice, simple and light player.

sycamorex 12-29-2011 04:51 AM

mpd + ncmpcpp

FredGSanford 12-29-2011 12:20 PM

For simplicity, MOC...I also use and like Audacious.

klearview 12-29-2011 12:29 PM

Big thanks to Clementine team for bringing back from the dead the best music player.

honeybadger 12-29-2011 12:55 PM

I wanted to vote for mplayer but I do not see it. Or perhaps the name has been changed or perhaps again I am too sleepy :)

jeremy 12-29-2011 01:33 PM

mplayer is in the Video Media Player Application of the Year category.

anticapitalista 12-30-2011 12:56 PM

Where is gogglesmm?

cheese1343 12-31-2011 05:14 AM

amarok or clementine when in kde, cmus when on battery power :)

raju.mopidevi 12-31-2011 07:48 AM

amarok !! good one

EricTRA 12-31-2011 08:07 AM

Hi,

RhythmBox here.

Kind regards,

Eric

snmcdonald 12-31-2011 05:22 PM

Windows Media Player...

kidding, I use VLC

ButterflyMelissa 01-01-2012 02:07 PM

Audacity, for radio, local stuff and because all the stuff can be organised in tabs, your selection stays there (VLC makes you rebuild your list) and...it works...

SecretCode 01-01-2012 04:02 PM

Now this category I don't think I can vote in ... I kind of like RhythmBox, Banshee, Guayadeque, Amarok and Audacious and I've begun to try out Exaile and Clementine ... but I'm not really happy with any of them.

LOL

Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

weirdwolf 01-02-2012 10:45 PM

mplayer and Clementine

Greenfuse 01-03-2012 03:52 AM

Gogglesmm is my favourite - all the features I need and very quick and light on resources.

wolsonjr 01-03-2012 08:54 AM

where are VLC and Mplayer??

wolsonjr 01-03-2012 08:56 AM

ps. used to like Audacious, but it's a cpu hog

While you definitely can play audio in VLC and MPlayer, these are not their main uses.

The info on MPlayer website says:
Quote:

MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems
VLC says:
Quote:

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.
Ok, this one actually mentions audio but I guess VLC is mostly used as a video player (IMO) and therefore belongs there.

As Jeremy mentioned a few times, it's difficult to come to a consensus (that would please everyone) as a lot of programs span a number of categories.

audriusk 01-03-2012 02:48 PM

Discovered cmus last year and fell in love with it. It has everything I need from a music player (love vi-like key bindings!).

JohnV2 01-03-2012 07:55 PM

I vote for Audacious. A use also XMMS and Amarok. For a chance someone know what is the difference in XMMS and XMMS2? I alway play and minimize so I never compared...

JohnV2 01-03-2012 07:57 PM

any chance to include emacs? I listen music from there too xD (is a joke)

philipgr 01-04-2012 09:26 AM

I like Clementine as well as Audacious and RhythmBox.

Regards
Philip

Kruptnick 01-04-2012 10:27 AM

MOC is all I need.
For some reason I don't like using GUI audio media players.

Gomer_X 01-04-2012 04:35 PM

Banshee is slow and clunky and buggy, but it's still my choice. It works better than the others I've tried. I primarily listen to podcasts with my audio player, and Banshee's playlist/music library handling works best for a library that changes every day.

Rhythmbox can't seem to grasp the concept that I'd want to delete an audio file as soon as I'm done listening to it.

I agree. GUI is not really helpful in playing music, IMO.

If the GUI can display album art, it can be useful information. Here's a screenshot of one I'm working on:

Nice work and I'm sure a lot of people will find it useful but it's not appealing to me. Personally I either actively LISTEN to music (no need for any distractions) or passively listen to it in the background while doing something completely unrelated (again no need for GUI). The really rare occasions when I want to look at the album art or lyrics do not justify the need for running an audio program that would keep connecting to the internet or unnecessarily hog my resources.

Obviously, these are my personal preferences and I'm aware that a lot of people might find such big programs like eg. Amarok genuinely useful.

craigevil 01-06-2012 02:56 PM

shell-fm, and moc. Other than mplayer/smplayer and vlc I do not have a GUI audio player installed.

Geeze... all this fondness for curses based stuff - we must be old Unix grey beards or something...

divyashree 01-07-2012 01:18 AM

I use mplayer in command line to play audio but its not in the list.

camuflage 01-07-2012 08:58 AM

Active music players for linux:

Amarok
Aqualung
aTunes
Audacious
Banshee

Decibel Audio Player
Exaile
gmusicbrowser
JuK
Listen
mpg123

Quod Libet
Rhapsody
Rhythmbox

cowlitzron 01-10-2012 01:36 PM

MOC, the Midnight Commander of audio players, more lightweight than the GUI players mentioned here. Should be a close race this year with Clementine and 2010 winner Amarok being the main contenders.

Bazzaah 01-13-2012 04:23 AM

Close one between Exaile and Audacious but Exaile gets it.

Knightron 01-13-2012 06:13 PM

Clementine :-D love it!!!!

noah_vale 01-17-2012 06:18 AM

Banshee worked straight out of the box with no need to consult help files. I've been a long time paying user of Mediamonkey on windows but can't get it to work nicely with any of the distros I've tried. Hohum.

ps_sabu 01-17-2012 12:26 PM

My choice is Exaile
