If the software is good, why not use it ?

Have to agree.

Because if the software is good and provides a better solution then it might be worth giving it a gander.

All I had to do was back up my dictionary first, then do a:

Code:

upgradepkg openoffice&libreoffice
And restore my dictionary. Voila!

But for you, I would suggest you check out OxygenOffice (Which by the way, will be following the Libre fork instead of Oracle from here on out).

Hope that helps :)

I think some folks in the Free Software movement would disagree with your pragmatic approach. However, there are some notable differences between the Oracle offering and the Document Foundation's offering, including, but not limited to, SVG image import, PDF import and improved compatibility with Microsoft Works documents (this is not an exhaustive list by any means! But this is better.). What the Document Foundation did was incorporate the changes the Go-OO builds have with Oracle's build to create the first LibreOffice release. As such, they're not the same pieces of software any more.

I'm with alroger. We should have Google Docs on the voting list!

I tend to use more specialized/powerful software for many of my daily tasks (LaTeX as a word processor, Matlab instead of a basic spreadsheet, etc...) but if I want a basic office suite, it's hard to beat Google Docs. All (or most) of the functionality of an office suite plus the abilities of 'the cloud,' which allows me to live share projects and access my documents anywhere (any computer plus my Android phone which is a huge plus for me).

Because LibreOffice is based on Go-oo, which sports several improvements over OOo. So following your logic, the best product here is LibreOffice.

Furthermore, LibreOffice is supported by FOSS giants such as Google and Red Hat.

spoovy 01-31-2011 11:51 AM

I don't understand all the fuss about OOo and it's forks, in my experience the whole shebang is old, bloated, slow, ugly, buggy and overrated in just about every single way.

Gnome office is the only FOSS solution even worth installing imho, and that is still p!ss poor compared to MS Office.

I would truly love to see proper FOSS office and PIM software, but unfortunately it seems it comes in at around 50th place to FOSS devs, lagging way behind developing yet another blue shiny KDE plama-gizmotron to tell me whether its sunny or not through the window I can already see through.

LibreOffice - I have not had much of a chance to use it yet, but early comparisons are already giving the nod to LibreOffice. Also, did a good job on the manual.

PrinceCruise 01-31-2011 01:59 PM

OOo sometimes beats M$ in terms of sluggishness and being heavy on resources, in those moments I just wish for a proper FOSS office product...*sigh

Well, THAT is a good reason. I haven't tried LibreOffice myself, but people giving as only justification "is not Oracle" really pisses me off.

I use OpenOffice.org for years and it just fits my needs and is really good

LibreOffice should be familiar to you then, it uses the same extensions etc. and it's just a tad faster. Its "export to PDF" function for example produces pdfs with a slightly smaller footprint on the hard drive.

Cityscape 02-05-2011 11:54 PM

I use and voted OpenOffice but I don't like Oracle and will use LibreOffice when it becomes more fully developed.

LibreOffice gets the nod for the courage to tell Larry where to shove it. Encouragement! Yes!!
