No offense, but doesn't Ubuntu 10.04+ make GNOME look decent (especially with the Ambiance and Radiance themes)? What about the default GNOME Shell theme (attached screenshot)?

Mint Debian with Gnome

I have tried KDE, Gnome, rox and lxde but xfce is the best

Xfce! Its fast, sexy, and will be a good replacement for gnome in the future

crazypenguin 01-29-2011 02:08 AM

I am becoming a big fan of Xfce and LXde. I liked KDE prior to v. 4.X.X. I never have been partial to Gnome.

For years and years, nor was I. Only used it when I had to,, and then only long enough to replace it with something else.

Then I got into OpenSolaris where Gnome was pretty much it unless you were willing to undertake major project of rolling your own. OpenSolaris had many other benefits, however, so I was willing to endure Gnome as part of the cost. To my chagrin I found that as I used Gnome for a period of months it began to grow on me. Nothing major or earth shattering leading to any kind of epiphany or anything like that, but rather little things discovered over time.

Long proponent of Xfce, having used it from 3.x days, and every once in a while I consider switching back. Then I ask myself why? And don't come up with any good reasons. If I wanted/needed lightweight then LXDE was tons lighter than present day Xfce.

Sometimes I also ponder going back to home rolled based on OpenBox, as having everything your way from the WM up has it's allure. Then I stop and think about how much extra work that involves - time that could be better spent on getting actual work done, and once again I'm back to Gnome.

Egads! Who'd of thunk it?!

I haven't tried Gnome v. 3.0. Perhaps I should give it a try one of these days?

Punk_Physicist 01-29-2011 12:12 PM

Big fan of Gnome

Won't officially come out until April 6. However, you can still try GNOME 2.91 if you want to test GNOME 3 in an effort to get rid of bugs...

I have been following the development of Gnome 3.0, but I have had no reason or desire to try it. Sorry but I am not a big fan of Gnome.

The Ambiance and Radiance themes look alright. I think its Mint's custom menu that impresses me more than anything else.

As for Gnome Shell, I will pass judgment when it is released and there are a few themes to play with.

I love GNOME. Never really liked how KDE looks or operates. XFCE is also quite nice.

foodown 01-31-2011 11:12 AM

I voted for LXDE, only because I think it has come the furthest in 2010.

It's attractive and lightweight. I still prefer Xfce, but that's only because my desktop is beefy enough that the speed difference between the two becomes negligible. On my old IBM laptop, LXDE is appreciably faster and almost as functional.

Once more rox will be overlooked by most, but not by me! Super light, super useful features.

fbr 01-31-2011 12:41 PM

KDE is rapidly improving, Gnome, nice but getting fatter, Xfce, neither fish nor fowl, LXDE, candy for speed freaks. All in all, KDE for me.
