Slackware.
It saves me so much time having it on user's computers.

shadowx 01-13-2011 11:53 AM

Slackware ...and not just best for 2010 , but for all time.
It does only and just what I told him to do , nothing more , nothing less ...just what a distribution should do! Obey the root :P

markush 01-13-2011 01:20 PM

Slackware, I always came back since 1994.

Markus

sycamorex 01-13-2011 01:39 PM

That's at least 4 votes for Slackware. Good start:)

hughetorrance 01-13-2011 01:56 PM

Slackware... Praise Bob ! that makes 5 votes.

FredGSanford 01-13-2011 04:44 PM

I have to say for the best all around distro I've used for the past couple of years would be Mandriva...alot of stuff works out the box.

savotije 01-13-2011 07:11 PM

Slackware :)

eveningsky339 01-13-2011 07:16 PM

Debian for me. I gave up on Ubuntu when people starting asking me about my new Mac. No kidding.

ubyt3m3 01-13-2011 09:44 PM

slackware... I've been using it for 2+ years now.

MrCode 01-13-2011 10:29 PM

I voted Arch, but I still predict that Slackware will win by a landslide yet again...

linuxlover.chaitanya 01-14-2011 12:09 AM

I use Ubuntu and vote for it.

inspiron_Droid 01-14-2011 12:29 AM

Isn't it normally Ubuntu that wins this catergory?.

AFAIR, last year it was Ubuntu.

brianL 01-14-2011 08:33 AM

Yeah, Ubuntu first, Slackware second. Unfortunately. Some people have no taste. :)

markush 01-14-2011 09:17 AM

I don't think it has something to do with taste but with the myth Slackware would be less newbiefriendly than Ubuntu.

PrinceCruise 01-14-2011 09:22 AM

Without a doubt, LINUX MINT :)

almatic 01-14-2011 09:29 AM

Ubuntu

I'm using debian now for more than a decade on my desktop, but I still vote for Ubuntu (though I had 2 kernel updates last year, which made my notebook unbootable).
I have the feeling that debian is falling behind too much in terms of package maintainance. Lots of broken packages which are not looked at and even more old packages.
I have some 50 ubuntu packages installed on my debian(!) system.

Melkor 01-14-2011 11:01 AM

Another vote for Mint here. While I used Slackware exclusively for years, I have to say, I have never been as impressed with a distro, heck, ANY operating system, as much as I have been with Linux Mint 10.

trademark91 01-14-2011 11:05 AM

Another vote for slackware

manwichmakesameal 01-14-2011 12:33 PM

Slackware for sure.

PrinceCruise 01-14-2011 02:20 PM

Slackware for Desktop Distro ??? ( May be I've gone a retard at the age of 23 ;) )

Sayan Acharjee 01-14-2011 02:35 PM

Mint for me :)

esteeven 01-14-2011 03:01 PM

I have just had a period of chopping and changing distros to see if anything works better on the desktop that Debian. Nothing does for me (Slackware came a close second!) So ..... Debian.

DavidMcCann 01-14-2011 04:09 PM

What about Salix? The reliability of Slackware with less hassle and a bigger repository.

jeremy 01-14-2011 04:21 PM

Salix has been added.

DragonSlayer48DX 01-14-2011 08:15 PM

Ubuntu, because it works. :D

new2l!nux 01-14-2011 11:06 PM

ubuntu for me

EricTRA 01-15-2011 03:03 AM

Hi,

Although I use Ubuntu, RedHat and Debian at work, my all time favorite is still Slackware which I use at home. One more for Slackware.

Kind regards,

Eric

Then you should know by now that mixing Ubuntu packages into Debian is a bad idea.
Don't be surprised when it breaks.

Any examples?,I use Testing/Unstable and can't say I've noticed any broken packages of late.
I'd say Squeeze is fairly stable right now.

Funny as fsck!!.
And you still voted for it?.

break what ? You can just look into the package and if it puts something in the wrong place, don't install it.

Examples for broken packages I remember are musescore and shutter. Wine and compiz are prominent packages, which are jsut too old to be useful. But the list is longer.

I still prefer Debian on my desktop atm because of their rolling updates in testing/sid. But if you don't care about that, ubuntu is probably the better choice.

thenktor 01-16-2011 10:54 AM

Salix, because Slackware rules and Salix just improves it further ;)

dora 01-16-2011 01:12 PM

Fedora got my vote.

Salix

Slackware with a human face

brashley46 01-16-2011 04:16 PM

Ubuntu for ease of use. I came to it from Xandros after work on the Xandros desktop ceased.

Tryum 01-16-2011 06:23 PM

I've voted Salix OS (since I'm using it) and also Zenwalk ;)
