OpenOffice

KOffice, because the architecture is actually sane (I'm looking at you, OOo).

Oh yes, and because the name sounds sort of like coffee.

OpenOffice..it got many features that others dont have.
like Database, Draw, Math, etc.

Can't remember what I actually voted for, but definitely NOT OpenOffice.org. It STILL lacks proper support for OTF fonts under X11/*nix (it only fully supports TTF style OTF fonts), although it has no problems with this under Windows. There is also STILL no real outline mode. Both of these issues were originally reported more than 5 years ago and have been steadily ignored. Font support has improved slightly, but it will be at least 3.2 before most of OO.org's font support problems under X11/*nix are sorted out.

EDIT spelling

OOo

I have to say Open Office all the way. You can set it up to be completely dynamic (in the spreadsheets), and it works seamlessly with all the proprietary programs out there.

OpenOffice for the landslide victory here.

guillotmarc 01-17-2009 07:52 PM

OpenOffice. I have not tried the other alternatives because OpenOffice is just fine to me.

Agreed. OpenOffice.org is the only office suite that I run with any frequency.

Open office - and it's come a long way since it's debut. - Version 3 for me finally delivers the promise of something to rival Microsoft's strangle hold on the business, or business minded, Community.

Eternal_Newbie 01-25-2009 05:04 PM

All I can say is that people who love OpenOffice obviously don't use many 3rd-party postscript-outline OTF fonts.
See these bugs (among others) for more detail:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16032 - OOo should support optional OpenType features (Metabug)
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=43029 - support PS-OpenType/OTF/(SFNT with CFF) fonts for PDF export and printing
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=78749 - some Latin text needs CTL processing

See how old these bugs are? Notice how they have only recently started working on them?

The Novell 'fork' contains a lot of improvements Sun wouldn't incorporate for whatever reason. Some because it doesn't fit their "vision," others due to plain old inertia.

I tried the version I linked and it's obviously better than the Sun offering. In fact it handles Microsoft office docs better, the 'compatibility issues' mentioned above (very true) were not apparent.

If you don't have an rpm based distro, search for "Novell GO office" and get the source. It's worth it.

+1 on the Sun comments. Sun wants the marketing buzz of being open source, yet still retain control. Look how they basically flipped off the community with the OpenSolaris trademark issue. So now that the FOSS devs have helped Solaris regain some relevance we get opensolaris.org for the real project, and opensolaris.com for the Sun marketing arm. Still, change tends to come slowly to big corps and I'm encouraged they're at moving in the right direction - the phb's just haven't quite figured it out how to let go of the control yet.

Not to get into bashing but since OOo is so closely tied to Sun thought I'd weigh in w/my $0.02.

catworld 01-26-2009 02:28 PM

Don't you agree that to some extent Novell has the FOSS-proprietary mix right? Ask the devs of OO and most will tell you horror stories about Sun delaying good code and expediting bad. Other way around with the Novell "fork." I hope that one gets the polish it needs. ATM spell check isn't working on my install. =(
