Graphics Application of the Year

Yes, we know many of these apps are not directly comparable.

That poll may have been best by two favorite.

ncsuapex 01-08-2009 11:29 AM

GIMP! Of course it's the only one I've really used out of this list. It's a bit tricky to learn if you're not used to photoshop type apps but it is very robust and fun to shop pictures with.

DJOtaku 01-09-2009 11:15 AM

I have too many favorites on this list!

H_TeXMeX_H 01-09-2009 12:41 PM

Well, I voted for GIMP last time, so this time I'll vote for Inkscape. Obviously they don't do the same thing, but they are both very good.

I totally agree. It's hard to pick one... but what the heck... I'll vote for gimp.

Hitboxx 01-09-2009 03:02 PM

GIMP.

kjuergen 01-09-2009 11:47 PM

BRL-CAD, naturally not in the list....

I haven't really done much image/graphic editing this year, but the few times I did, I used Gimp. A while back, I could not vote for Gimp without voting to Blender. I was using both at all times. So I am voting Gimp, because it is the only one I actually used. I love blender though :)

mjjzf 01-10-2009 01:11 AM

I find that Krita makes many things accessible that I have to hunt down in GIMP, so I would usually use that over GIMP.
But I have voted Inkscape - a potent program, particular in a combo with the HeathenX screencasts.

Thanks for the link to screencasters etc., just checked it out and it looks useful. Voted GIMP last year, but have been doing much more vector stuff this year ( bought a good camera as well which helps), so go Inkscape.

eerok 01-11-2009 07:29 AM

I voted gimp, but I don't think it was a fair question.

allend 01-11-2009 07:41 AM

Voted for Scribus because it saved my butt when I needed to get a poster presentation together in a hurry. Went from concept on Friday PM through learning Scribus to finished PDF Monday AM for printing by Monday PM.
Wish I could vote more than once for this one!

divyashree 01-11-2009 12:12 PM

I like both GIMP and BLENDER

Eternal_Newbie 01-12-2009 11:22 AM

gimp, blender and inkscape but I voted for blender this year.

mariuz 01-13-2009 11:28 AM

I voted tuxpaint because i gave it to my nephew (3 years) and it loved it

jiml8 01-13-2009 06:36 PM

Imagemagick.

How else are you going to type on the command line: "convert this.thistype to this.thattype" and have it happen?

John VV 01-13-2009 09:06 PM

you left out
ISIS 3 from the U.S.G.S.
and Nip2/vips

code933k 01-15-2009 04:48 AM

Imagemagick but...

Agreed !!

I have overused imagemagick so much this days that I couldn't vote for my beloved Gimp and Inkscape. Two finest applications which are doing a lot of improvements.

One should recognize also the Xara's people efforts. I'll test it again right now.

yeahr, there is a reason why they are called "BIG" in short :D
hard choice...

davidwiener 01-15-2009 08:06 AM

FPDF

I'm using the heck out that right now. Maybe purists don't consider PDFs graphics. If not, then what category should this be in?

Paul van Aken 01-15-2009 12:57 PM

there's only one, and it is not (yet) for linux, and you all know which I mean, Yes it's Photshop!

bulava 01-15-2009 04:27 PM

Mostly I use Gimp...maybe am lagging in this area (self-motivation!).

b2bwild 01-16-2009 01:06 AM

Useless poll....
GIMP owns all the way.

N3rding 01-16-2009 03:09 PM

Well I guess I'm going to have to vote Blender as it has become my new favorite toy, I still use gimp for painting my models though :P

paperboy 01-17-2009 06:44 AM

Graphics app of the year

A lot to choose from here. I like Inkscape and Gimp, but for all around usefulness and features (even though it's nowhere near complete) I'll have to vote for Xara. I use this a lot at work and it's the closest thing to CorelDraw I have found.

cyent 01-18-2009 02:11 PM

I've shifted my vote this year to Krita.

I have long been loyal to gimp, but krita's UI design is just better.

I hope it is a wakeup call to the gimp team, UI design matters. Indeed I hope krita and gimp merge again.

pthalo 01-23-2009 08:01 PM

I voted for tuxpaint. It's a fun challenge to try to create serious artwork with it, easy to use, and I really like it. I do use Gimp a lot too, but I've got my locale set to Macedonian, which is good for learning the language, but bad for using complicated programs like Gimp at this stage of learning. ;)

jhwilliams 01-25-2009 08:03 AM

Man, I was so excited when I found out about Inkscape. GIMP is old news and kind of blows anyway, my vote is definitely for Inkscape. It's one of those projects that measurably improves the quality of a GNU/Linux workstation.

mcphargus 01-25-2009 02:44 PM

With a Non-linear video-editor, audio-editor, game-engine and 3D Modeling app/Texturer/Renderer/UV/Physics simulator all rolled into a single production power-house super-burrito package, I have to go with Blender.

hooked2u 01-29-2009 10:13 AM

gimp

Inkscape. although i'm not an expert in vector editing, it looks like an example of professionalism in graphics for the Linux desktop.
maybe my choice is influenced by the fact i work in the 3d industry and i see the flaws of Blender and Gimp. there is no FLOSS hope for me now, as IMO Blender took the wrong path (for example i think K-3D is on a good one, but far behind) and don't do too much 2d though i think Gimp is too stubborn in thinking by "it can be done" instead of productivity.

SkyEye 01-31-2009 03:59 PM

Out of Blender, GIMP and ImageMagick I don't use Blender. Finally voted for GIMP

jms1989 02-03-2009 08:50 PM

Kolorpaint for simple image editing and gimp for everything else.

sergey_feo 02-04-2009 11:38 AM

IMHO "Graphics Application of the Year" should be divided to "Raster Graphics Editor of the Year", "Vector Graphics Editor of the Year" and "Graphics Viewer of the Year".
In my case corresponding applications will be GIMP, none, gqview. In case of Windows users it can be Photoshop, Corel Draw and ACDSee :-)

chilebiker 02-04-2009 12:30 PM

Inkscape is a hell of a program. Finally I was able to switch all my "old" projects from Freehand to Inkscape.

dora 02-06-2009 09:24 AM

Voted for GIMP.
