I use knoppix because its very simple

nonlintech 03-01-2006 10:23 AM

PC Linux OS. Installs simple. Never had any problems with it and is even pleasing to the eye.

djmclaws 03-01-2006 04:46 PM

It suprizes me that Puppy linux has been left off the LiveCD list. I've tried Slax, DSL, Knoppix, Beatrix, and others. They all have their strengths, but my favorite is Puppy. I use it on my laptop all the time. Very fast and flexible. A great one for Newbies to play with and learn linux on. My :twocents:

knoppix best on laptop. Instant setup of ndiswrapper. Awesome

vytalelementz 03-01-2006 07:52 PM

I have to say knoppix since I haven't tried others :(

dsschanze 03-01-2006 09:52 PM

Knoppix is the only one that I have used THIS year...and so far, I think it is better than both the Redhat 7.3 and Suse 9 LiveCD's.

kestrel1 03-02-2006 03:41 PM

I opted for Knoppix, as my fav isn't listed. I found Slynux during the year & found it very good. You can get it here: http://www.slynux.co.nr/

baldy1324 03-02-2006 08:31 PM

Knoppix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i vote KNOPPIX b/c im kind of a classic guy (i ditch ubuntu for debian every time i try it)
knoppix started this idea-it has best hardware detection ive seen
live distros that concentrate more on hd installation (like mepis) i dont like
ubuntu live sux-it cant set anything up
knoppix started it all and it's soul shall always live on

slaxxx

slax bse it is based on slackware use it and u wil love

Ryptyde 03-03-2006 06:37 PM

DamnSmallLinux

I chose Damn Small Linux (DSL) because it is light weight and runs on most any box.At Distrowatch it is rated #6 out of the 100 distros listed there.

Anyways make sure to vote for your fav.

DrEwMoNeY 03-19-2006 03:36 AM

I am not even slightly surprised Knoppix is at the top. Knoppix is just as much a standard as it is a live CD.

SLAX has far more to offer than Ubuntu, but the obvious noob-heavy voting, is no more surprising than the Knoppix vote count.

Is there a way to list members by distribution? There should be.

dsschanze 03-19-2006 08:10 AM

I've got to go with Knoppix too, because as most people have said it's the standard and it has a lot of functionality built into even the live cd.

I did try out some others that were kind of specialty, like Local Area Security, for security and cracking related things, and I thought that was pretty cool (but that could never be the distro of the year, cause it is specialty).

What about users with multiple distributions, do they count as one per each? That would be unfair, IMO.

DrEwMoNeY 03-19-2006 02:41 PM

I'm sure every member only gets one vote. I suppose if you had more than one account, you could vote twice.

This poll only shows what people thought was the best live CD, at the time they voted. I think it is a good indicator of popularity. Showing the popularity of something, does not necessarily reflect how good or bad it is.

I think he was meaning listing members by what distros we really use.

I a way we do if each member fills it in and keeps it update on the left under our name, but it would be interesting to see those numbers on one page.

I aggree about knoppix being the standard, If I'm not misstaken DSL uses knoppix Hardware detection even though they are slackware based.

I like knoppix, but I had to go with DSL because that's what I use due to the fact I am always working on older smaller machines and knoppix takes a good deal logger to load and then the system runs loaded down. With DSL it's up and runs with a lot less load on the system.

Yeah, you're right, I was just reading too much into what else was said. I saw the word "unfair" and just didn't understand why someone being listed twice would be "unfair". I get it now though.

I guess for example I would be found under Slackware and SLAX. I suppose to make it "fair", I would have to pick one or the other to be listed under. I could live with that.

Wp2 03-28-2006 11:09 PM

..just read through the posts and voted mepis when the poll was going on.
For me mepis and knoppix are way up there. When I first came around to Linux I was surprised to see that the local library was booting up their systems with a knoppix kernel. Before my old computer died knoppix was the only distro which would work.
Some other livecds not mentioned which gave me the "wow" feeling:
goblinx
whax
elive
lg3d - seeds for something great I feel
I pretty much like anything linux so I enjoy downloading and discovering as many as I can get my puter on. I have a slower connection than most so it takes me a day to download a full size iso so if I download yet another basic kde setup with a different splash screen and background I'm a little disappointed I have to admit.

3xodus 04-14-2006 01:10 AM

Ubuntu all de way!!

eagles-lair 05-15-2006 05:41 AM

I like the latest Simply Mepis (v 3.4.3 I think)

Ubuntu was a fav about 15 months ago but later ones didn't work as smoothly from my perspective

Knoppix was good back in 3.3 days, but since then the changes to their default wallpaper make it difficult for my deteriorating eyesight.

w3stfa11 09-22-2006 06:40 PM

Slax, because it's the only one that boots from my brother's computer. I am duly impressed.

eagles-lair 09-22-2006 06:49 PM

PCLinuxOS is also nice to use.

However I think the one that really is the bee's knees is PuppyLinux.

It's sheer speed compared with most (if not all) installed ones I've tried is nothing short of phenomenal.

It does just about everything you could want it to do. Top marks to the team there, I'm becoming a convert :D

Oh just cos the head designer is an ozzie doesn't mean I'm biassed, lolol :)

Studio 64

I've just found a debian based distro called Studio 64. Its very easy to use, uses the Synaptic Package Manager for updating, and generally runs like a dream.

Pclos

I have tested about 8 different Live cd's, the most user friendly install experience with the best post install config tools and, In my opinion, The most helpful user forum has been PCLinuxOS .93 (Big Daddy version).

btw, Ubuntu is our second preferred distro at FBK.
