Voted Xmms. If it was possible: Definately Beep Media Player.

pilotgi 01-30-2006 03:04 PM

Almost voted for Amarok, which I like, but it freezes on me a lot. Voted for K3b.

Kensai 01-30-2006 03:07 PM

AmaroK is the best for me although a little unstable on FreeBSD. I don't know why.

ZephyrXero 01-30-2006 03:42 PM

Beep/BMPx isn't in the list??? Please add it so I can vote for my real favorite this year ;)

ozar 01-30-2006 07:00 PM

sticking with xmms for now

misunderstruck 01-30-2006 09:02 PM

XMMS can't be beat for simplicity, Rhythmbox is good for large collections, K3B is my choice for burning, and GRip is fine for ripping CD's. Plus, I use Gtkpod for dealing with the iPod.

While still in a pre-alpha stage, the Banshee music player is worth checking out (or at least keeping an eye on). It combines the features of the above applications, and does most of them well. Of course, every time I try plugging in my iPod, it crashes Banshee. Did I mention it's pre-alpha?

xanas3712 01-30-2006 09:39 PM

Amarok, too many good features to miss.

croakinglizard 01-31-2006 02:00 AM

A second vote for Muine. I'm using it now.

vharishankar 01-31-2006 04:36 AM

Voted Audacity. Was a close thing between Amarok and Audacity, but I guess the poll doesn't allow two votes ;)

Wolki 01-31-2006 06:09 AM

Add me to the Muine camp. Simply the best player for me.

i_m_meen 01-31-2006 07:43 AM

Where's BeepMediaPlayer/BMPx/Audacious?
Quite a miss...

NoWindowsInMyHome 01-31-2006 08:49 AM

i voted for gstreamer. rhythmbox and banshee are good, and have just enough functionality. amorak and k3b, while quite good, are too unstable and crash all the time.

Yeah, bmp development has come a long way in the last year, granted they're starting over (kinda) with bmpX but I'd still vote for them, if I could

Ardour, MusE, but not Rosegarden?!

Consider this an official request to add Rosegarden to this list, though I also agree with the other commentary to the effect that this lump category really is far from ideal, even bearing in mind how you've grouped, say, Scribus with the GIMP and other such. I understand you're after "which of these does its job best," but you didn't bundle Kuickshow with the GIMP, and for good reason.

I think you need to focus on the creation/consumption divide, though a completely fair treatment of all the individual niches under the gigantic "audio" umbrella would require quite a lot of individual categories. Best sequencer, best recorder, best wave editor, best soft synth, best audio subsystem/infrastructural component... I'm sure other special interest groups in other categories have similar opinions about their own niches, and if you made all of us happy, it would get completely ridiculous. Audio creators/editors/synthesizers vs. Audio players doesn't seem too much of a reach though.

Well, anyway, please do at least add Rosegarden to this current melee, so we can get my one vote.

Thanks.

amaroK for sure!! the best music player i've ever seen!!
