How about a "Web Browser Plugin" category? Stuff like Flash/Shockwave, StumbleUpon, Blog This, the Download entire site plugin for Mozilla, Googlebar, etc. There's I'm sure lots out there and I use several myself. I would have also said Java and Javascript but those are a necessity so those I didn't think would really count as a "plugin" :)

How long does this actually go for?

How about firewall of the year? Like iptables, ipchains, lokkit, firestarter, etc.?

adz 12-13-2003 10:35 PM

My understanding was that iptables is a replacement for ipchains and all the others are just front ends for iptables.

graphics?

Perhaps there should be a graphics category for applications like gimp, sodipodi, imagemagick, and others.

i reckon there should be a best live-cd distro poll next time. i ran one at: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/poll.php?s=&action=showresults&pollid=409

but it wasn't a very good list to start with and "other" got lots of votes! there are more and more live distros and while some people obviously don't like them i think we'll see more and more people get their first taste of linux from these...

the appearance of a Damn Small Linux forum in the Distro forum (in the last half hour) shows that there is considerable interest in live stuff. Bit surprised there isn't a Knoppix forum yet!

One other thing: generally speaking i think some differentiation between distro "types" might be good in the future. e.g. at the mo, in best distro, you have Vector and Slack, now obviously, Vector is Slack but they are different...not really sure what i am suggesting...anyone with me?

The polls close on the 10th of this month. Please also note that the results are now hidden to increase the suspense :) Next year the results will be hidden for the entire duration.

bah if you're to hide the results, there will be no motivation to come back until the end.
Maybe you could ask for a special feature for vBulletin (or develop it ?) : showing results only 1 time out of 100 views for the lucky one, this will increase the interest (and the load on your server...)

well, hiding is not the way open source should go ;-)

I'll wager 100 quatloos that fewer people will vote if the race element is removed and they can't see how their horse is doing.

The polls are now closed. I am processing the votes now and results should be available later today. Thanks to everyone that voted!
