nOOb lan/mouse annoyances - help requested

Installed FreeBSD last week and after some searching - am loving getting to actually learn how the computer works a bit, but having said this....

got it installed - with a couple of small annoyances - read Handbook/forums here, but don't get a response that's worked, so ideas would be greatly appreciated -

1) LAN - default kernel, KDE is on internet, but does not show LAN, ping completes and no loss

card is a Kingston KNE120TX - but drivers suggested rl0?

2) Scroll Wheel - Just figured it out!!

3) Soundcard - Do i have to build a custon kernel to get sound to work? I am limping on a uDMA erroring HD until more money, so kernel will not make..... is there a way in configs without compliling?

sound card=Creative soundblaster 128 (CT4700)

4) LAST - I promise!! THe HD??? Do the errors listed in dmesg mean bad HD? or are there settings that would get around this as well?

Thanks in advance for ANY ideas!!

Well it looks like either your HDD is dying, or you have some bad cables, or you haven't connected the cable properly.

When you say you can't "see the LAN", do you really mean that you can't see your Windows shares? Since you say you can reach the Internet, it does not appear that you have any problems with the actual network connection. If you want to be able to browse Windows shares you'll need to install Samba, which is not included in the base install but which is in the ports tree.

Your NIC driver is rl(4) because the NIC is based on a Realtek chipset. There are many companies that make network cards, but not so many that make ethernet chipsets. That's why your Kensington card uses a Realtek driver.

Awesome -was wondering what the time frame for response would be...

Thanks for your response - I have started SAMBA port - all I wanted to accomplish is listed in the pkg-descr for samba (printer/file sharing) have read about this, but am just coming up to speed...

Do you know of a way other than custom kernel to get soundcard to init? (I can't build new right now but when I get the new HD, would like to have all the other bugs worked out)

Again, thanks for your help -

btr

edit - port now shows SAMBA already installed, but KDE says "Lisa" is not running - and this action requires SAMBA....... still no progress

Sound:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...und-setup.html

LISA:
http://lisa-home.sourceforge.net/

You shouldn't really need LISA unless you want a GUI interface. As long as Samba is installed you can still mount SMB/CIFS shares. Do
$ apropos smb

and you should get a lot of man pages that explain various componets of the Samba suite. For instance, mount_smbfs(8), findsmb(1), smbclient(1), smbsh(1), and smbtree(1).

And what if you do want the gui interface for LAN Browsing?

The documentation on both Lisa and Samba is attrociously inadequate, like most contemporary documentation, it has fallen into a complex blackhole. Ten years ago, you could search for something and find a simple answer; not so anymore.

With KDE, if "smb:///" works, but the split window Konqueror "LAN Browsing" reports "Lisa does not appear to be running," when it is running, as confirmed by a prompt "lisa -v" there is no information on how to quickly get the "LAN Browsing" configuration to see why. There is no right-click on the "LAN Browsing" because this will only return the same stupid error message.

Gurus have taken to using sarcasm, rather than answering a question, or, they have chosen to impart personal opinions in place of an answer. You would think that getting KDE to realize that Lisa is, in fact, running, would be a simple matter. However, Katy & Lisa seem to be going down the same garden path as the rest of the software on the Internet with non-answers to beginners' questions.

Thelma & Lousie/Katy & Lisa.

There are no workable lisarc configuration files readily available.
There are no workable samba configuration files readily available.
There is no documentation on HOWTO make KDE realise that both are running and usable.

Just the same as there is no real workable documentation on HOWTO make PHP work, or MySQL work, etc., etc., etc..

The simplest questions, like how do you make these programs realise you are trying to configure them "BEFORE" they demand you login to set the login passwords up? No real working text exists!

You have to hack and crack until you figure out how to get the answer you're looking for, as opposed to the answer every guru assumes you're looking for.

And when ps -x shows neither is running, yet you know they are because you're using them, the nightmare increases.

The answer to life, the universe, the whole thing, is 42. The question was "What is nine times six."

That pretty much describes the state of current documentation.
