New in Linux (FreeBSD Installation)

Hi all,

Im from a windows environment, (MCSA and more) and having real hardship successfully installing FreeBSD 7.2. I just cant seem to install FreeBSD until beatifull splash screen.

I can get until to X11 (as i'm told) but typing startx. from there my keyboard and mouse don't work.

Please help...

( i easily installed Ubuntu, set up email and updates. I really didn't have hustles with Ubuntu.)

Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors (lines beginning with "EE").

I think your X needs to be configured. Please, read this carefully: X11 Configuration, it helped me and many others a lot.

Tip1
Add these lines to /etc/rc.conf
If : Just a default xorg-7.4_2

Code:

hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"

If : You're using Gnome2

Code:

gnome_enable="YES"

If : You're running KDE4

Code:

hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
local_startup="${local_startup} /usr/local/kde4/etc/rc.d"
kdm4_enable="YES"

Tip 2
Alwayes send your xorg.conf entirely(with the exceptions of comments)
Tip 3
There's two type of free implementation of X11 -- current release
XFree86™ 4.4RC2 && Xorg 7.4
As of FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, the default flavor of X11 was changed to Xorg (Hot/Relax Licence!)
Tip 4
Starting with version 7.4, Xorg use HAL to autodetect keyboards and mice (Above Solution)
Tip 5
FreeBSD IS NOT Linux. Maxiumum differences are in kernel && base system, and a average but important differnce in third-party app/util compiling/installing.
So, If you want to use freeBSD you must review it's manuals from scratch.

Does FBSD 8.0 support the Broadcom BCM 4312 wireless NIC...? and 64 bit support for Nvidia GPU...?

normally whenever i have that kind of problem i just edit the xorg.conf file; in the serverflags section i make sure the AllowEmptyInput option is set to false i.e.

Option AllowEmptyInput false

whixh will make sure the keyboard and mouse are never disabled

Thanks guys, I certainly will try out your suggestions.
Currently my machine is downloading a whole lot of stuff (ports) from ftp://freeBSD.org. This is because someone sad I do not have any files under X11 in my hard disk. THe unfortunate part is that its taking days to complete the download :-(
