On FreeBSD installations (and there's not really a question in here, just a general "what the hell???")...
I have a Compaq Armada 1500 laptop from 1997 with roughly <300mHz and 4GB running FreeBSD 5.1 quite smoothly. X and internet all running perfectly, no problem. So, for my other (and newer ) Toshiba laptop (Pentium III, 850mHz, 14GB) I decided to plunk FreeBSD in as well, next to Windows XP and Slackware 9.0. I try to install from the 5.1 CD, which goes fine until for some reason Free BSD thinks the PCI bus has a value of 0. Then it just stops. For-e-ver.
So I try the 4.8 CD, but that won't even boot. Note that both these CDs worked perfectly fine on the older Compaq Armada. So I made some boot floppies and decided to stick to 4.8 for now, since it's the "stable" release, so it might not be upset by my PCI bus (or whatever). Everything goes fine, I get to pick packages, I tell it to install from my CD and then... nothing. It can't find the CD. I tried with the floppies and the 5.1, but the exact same thing happens.
After that I decided to just stick with Slackware for now on that Toshiba, but after my FreeBSD installing travails it appeared the end of my partitions was beyond the scope of my harddrive. Err.... right! Let's just reinstall Windows then, shall we?
