Freebsd 6.2 roundcube, imap problem (one of them)

system info: freebsd 6.2, custom kernel (and world, and make.conf, etc..), apache22, roundcube, pf

let's start with something simple. i want to be able to read my mail from the web, and eventually create some accounts. this being said, i set out to install roundcube. as i saw, things did not go well (nor did they in the past with http mail reading) and i first played around with squirrel mail (it seemed easier to begin with). anyway, i installed squirrelmai (from ports) and checked through configtest.php to see what things are not in order. the error i get is imap server related. to be precise, i had non instaled at the time. so i installed cyrus (didn;t work), imap-uw (same story) and courier imap daemon (same story here also). now... i'm not going to askfor any1 to tell be bit by bit how to do it, but instead i'm asking for a tutorial if any of you know one. a good tutorial that explains to the last bit everything, with as much details as posible.

q: for the guys that worked with mail over the web and master it: what imapserver do you recoment and why and what mail frontend do you like or recoment and why (tryed squirrelmail, rouncube, heared of exim, and that kinna covers it); plus some winning combinations between imapserver, pop3server, mail frontend would be nice. for instance lets say rouncube with imap-uw and god knows what pop3 server.

my ideeas are mixed up at the moment, so any explanations (or tutorials) are more than welcomed.

keep in mind, i never succeeded in setting up a mail web front-end.

situation update

i've been playing with courier-imapd and got it working (well, kinna anyway) but squirrellmail reports "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server." after i click the login button.

ok, next i tryed to see what comes up if i telnet in on 143. here's the output
Code:
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE ACL ACL2=UNION STARTTLS] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2005 Double Precision, Inc. See COPYING for distribution information.
stalls for about 1 minute here, then i get
Connection closed by foreign host.
if i try to write anything (say i write "login") (i seriously lack the knowledge of telnet) while the imap server stalls i get this
Code:
login
login NO Error in IMAP command received by server.
now i may lack the knowledge of imap, but that ERROR in IMAP thing doesn't look healthy to me. does it to you?

so i check the logs (var/log/messages) and i get
Code:
Oct 6 03:02:59 dchub sm-mta[10655]: l9602wF6010653: SYSERR(root): makeconnection_ds: unsafe domain socket /var/imap/socket/lmtp
now, i remember a courier-auth folder somewere in the system, i cd into it, and see 2 files, one of which is named authdaemon, so i ./ (eecute)it and receive this output
Code:
INFO: modules="authuserdb authvchkpw authpam authldap authmysql authpgsql", daemons=5
INFO: Installing libauthuserdb
INFO: Installation complete: authuserdb
INFO: Installing libauthvchkpw
INFO: Shared object "libauthvchkpw.so" not found, required by "authdaemond"
INFO: Installing libauthpam
INFO: Installation complete: authpam
INFO: Installing libauthldap
INFO: Installation complete: authldap
INFO: Installing libauthmysql
INFO: Installation complete: authmysql
INFO: Installing libauthpgsql
INFO: Shared object "libauthpgsql.so" not found, required by "authdaemond"
there are 2 .so files that are unaccounted for.

later edit....

when i login through telnet to the imapserver i get
Code:
a login test@dchub.da1.ro test
* BYE Temporary problem, please try again later

for all whom have IMAP ERROR ssl localhost 993 connection error
my problems were solved not only by restarting cyrus (or your imap server) but by first stopping that mailserver,
then killing all imapd processes ( killall imapd ) and then restarting cyrus

a simple restart of cyrus (imap server) without killing the imapd processes made the connection error of ssl / php come back

another fix that I had to apply was the php.ini var session.auto_start = Off
because otherwise I got redirected back to the roundcube loginpage
maybe you can more easily implement this in a htaccess file

hope I helped some folks

Regards,
Latcho

this was on debian + cyrus
