audio problems

I've done a search of the forums here, and I was unable to find something that was as specific as I need, so:

I'm having audio problems. KDE will let me play sounds, but if I try to open XMMS or X11AMP, it gives me the generic error,
"Cannot open audio"

XINE works fine, other than messing with the rest of the colors on the screen, it plays video and sound flawlessly

I'm running a soundblaster live! value.
pcm0: <Creative EMU10K1> port 0x9000-0x901f irq 3 at device 13.0 on pci0

I have a feeling that KDE is using /dev/dsp, and not letting other programs use it.

Any ideas?
