The best thing I like about FreeBSD is the memory resource efficiency the entire o/s has.

I like being on the bleeding edge with regard to software, so I like the ports system.

I like its rock solid stability. You can install it on pc hardware from a PII 350 on up with the same solid functionality. There is no better OS to put on your old machine than BSD in my opinion. The ports and package system is great.

All of the latest versions of software.
It is a well designed mature working environment. Loading modules at startup is simple. Hardware support is good. Sound and video support is good. Oh ya, documentation second to none.
I would like to see optical drives auto mounted. I would like to see easier support for CDR's
Depends on what you want to do with the box. For internet access, web browsing, email access, streaming audio-video, FreeBSD is second to none. Linux is fine too, But when I want to stream a long video file, or download a large .iso I turn on the BSD box.
This is an OS and apps that you can be proud to introduce your friends to.

i like ports too, bleeding edge too and the ports system. kernel configuration is faster than make menuconfig and freebsd runs very well on old hardware. I am backing up data on debian and will soon move back to freebsd at home, give another shot at slackware on the laptop and debian at work.
I too, think that memory usage seems to be handled better on bsd.

I personally like the consistency of the design. Take for instance, to dial out on freebsd I edit /etc/ppp.conf. To set up a PPPoE internet connection I edit PPPoE. Everything is one place. Off course there is also the simplicity of the run levels which elimintates the need for numerous run levels I will never make use of. Finally there is the simplicity of the /etc directory. If I want to start something at boot time I simply have to add it to /etc/rc.conf. I like that .. ease of management and consistency of design all about. It is a really cool unix like distro which delivers.

Stability is definately huge.

The ports system is as well. It's such a nice way of managing packages (it's not perfect, but very good).

Once something works, it will continue to work. Things don't happen without reason.
