0.5 second sound delay

Whenever I try to play a game or something, I always get a half a second sound delay when in music or shooting guns. I'm using FreeBSD 5.3 Beta 7 and have experienced the samething on Slackware 10. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how can I fix it? I'm using a AC'97 Intel soundcard (a common onboard sound card.)
