X-Windows Resolution

I'm running blackbox on FreeBSD 5.0 and if I set my XF86Config file to a depth of 8 then blackbox displays at 1024x768 with some color distortion. If I set it to a depth of 16 then blackbox displays at 800x600 with no distortion. The problem is 800x600 is a little small and I would like to display it at 1024x768. If I try changing the resolution options in XF86Config to 1024x768 it still displays at 800x600. Does anyone know how I can get it to display at 1024x768 with a depth of 16 ? Thanks

Here is my XF86Config file:

Your X file is configured for Vesa, that's framebuffering, what's the card onboard? Would X not work with your card otherwise?

Cheers,

It's an Intel Extreme Graphics card. I tried the VGAs but Vesa is the only thing that seems to get X to "work".

Intel Extreme? As in i845 or i830 chipsets? There have been a bunch of problems with these, if you want to try a binary install of X, they just got working drivers for the i845 in XFree86 4.2.99-3 or 4, check the changelogs for details... otherwise if you are stuck with vesa, check to see if you can give your video more stolen memory in BIOS, the default is 1 Meg, usually you can get 8, which will at least get you a horrid but serviceable 1024x768 at 16.

Luck,

Finegan

Honestly man, there is very little information on my type of card. Here is what I get from Windows XP.

Name Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controller
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2562&SUBSYS_80931043&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&10
Adapter Type Intel(R) 82845G/GL Chip, Intel Corporation compatible
Adapter Description Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controller
Adapter RAM 64.00 MB (67,108,864 bytes)
Installed Drivers ialmrnt5.dll
Driver Version 6.13.01.3119
INF File oem30.inf (i845G section)
Color Planes 1
Color Table Entries 4294967296
Resolution 1024 x 768 x 60 hertz
Bits/Pixel 32
Memory Address 0xE8000000-0xEFFFFFFF
Memory Address 0xE7800000-0xE787FFFF
IRQ Channel IRQ 16
I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\ialmnt5.sys (6.13.01.3119, 76.22 KB (78,045 bytes), 5/22/2002 9:42 PM)

So xfree86.org says this...

"The X server driver for the 830M and 845G is part of the "i810" driver. It's only the DRI/DRM components that are different for the 830M and 845G compared with the 810 and 815. To fix this problem, make sure that your XF86Config file references the "i810" driver, not "i830"."

Ok, so I add the "i810" to the config in place of "vesa" and it errors saying "(EE) No Devices Detected".

I swear it is just one problem after another with X.

This is a set-top box right? Dell probably? Some HPs have these... yeah this if this is an i845GL, you'll have to do the binary upgrade of XFree, heck I think its in the current ports collection although I haven't fiddled with FreeBSD source compiles yet as most of my BSD track record has been on Open. Regardless, I'm almost certain there's a FreeBSD build available from XFree.

Also, does your BIOS have the memory grab option up to 8Mb? I don't know how its headed or where as I've only read the rather vague intel pages about it.

This was a gen from xf86config, offhand did you try the shot-in-the-dark:

X -configure

Trying to let X snag one itself? Without cute little linux binaries like lspci to go on I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to ID the card exactly. I gotta switch a mjor machine around here over to the BSD dark side.

Cheers,

Finegan
