Why startx only leads me to a login & xterm?

I installed Freebsd5.3, choosed ALL packages . Howerver, pkg_info show me no KDE or GNOME , I'm really confused, why?

i'm really new, and i'm assuming you are? sorry if you're not... i really don't know, all i know is that i had a similar type of problem wehre i had no graphical environment, but it turns out you have to install kde and gnome from the ports list by logging in and running sysinstall then chosing packages, then under gnome selecting the appropriate packages

hope this helps

Try creating a .xinitrc and add the line "exec startkde" for KDE or "exec gnome-session" for gnome. If KDE or gnome is installed they should then run.

If you installed all packages then KDE and GNOME should have been installed as well.

Just go back into sysinstall and under post install find the xmanagers and install gnome or kde or whichever you prefer and then make yourself a .xintrc file as described above and it should work for you, I had the same problem and found out that the .xinitrc file is not put on by default even if you do install gnome or kde you still need to make that file to call it after you install your window manager
