Why do default BSD kernels typically disable PNP BIOS support?

Just wondering... A lot of older computers, especially 2006-2009 vintage laptops, in my experience have problems with things like ACPI and wireless unless PNP BIOS support is enabled. Compiliing a new kernel is less of a big deal on BSD than on Linux, but still, this seems a bit odd.

Can anyone tell me what the reasoning is?

Mmm it's odd what you say because ACPI replaces pnpbios.
Anyway 2009 laptop aren't vintage.
