Good luck with your ideals. Start with what technical aspects you need and which distro will meet your requirements. Then start trying them out. Involving personalities in your decision will be error prone.

Ancient history. Use OpenBSD or do not. I can tell you from personal experience that OpenBSD is an amazing operating system as is NetBSD. As previously mentioned you should try things out and decide for yourself what operating system you want to use.

If you must "judge" Theo, then judge his ethics of wanting clean, fully open, secure, as bug free as possible, tested, reliable, and working code for OpenBSD to create one of the most secure operating systems in the world.
