What's with timidity on freeBSD?

Hello! I just write to ask if someone knows what is the state of timidity on freeBSD, and why so many packages rely in timidity instead of timidity++ (They offer the same binary, but the first one stopped being maintained in 1995, and the former, which is a fork is still being maintained). Timidity is a software synthesizer to play MIDI music

I am wondering because many games try to pull timidity, which doesn't work well anymore. (some games will freeze while playing music, but work fine if I install timidity++) Actually I think that it is sdl_mixer1.2 which pulls it. I don't like the idea of modifying the port Makefile, because that will be overwritten every time I update the ports tree. With the binaries is more difficult to do anything, as they tend to be precompiled with the wrong version and pulls it as dependencies (and removes such binaries if I try to install timidity++). Is it there any way of solving this issue using proper package management? As for now I am forced to just compile manually any package that tries to pull timidity.

Thanks in advance
