ubuntuBSD
Greetings,
I just read about this BSD. What do you folks think? Is ubuntuBSD a good idea? Your thoughts? https://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntubsd/ |
Interesting to note I gave it a try in a vm on Virtualbox. X widows wouldn't load properly. This is very much a beta.

I was going to give it a go in vbox tonight

Shoot. A BSD for the computer clueless scooter tramp. But only in 64 bit.
I was hoping for a Atom friendly 32 bit iso. No biggy. The other ones that give me fits learning. They come in 32 bit. Hey. If my external Soundmine Skull Candy Bluetooth speaker can be made to work in a Ubuntu based BSD with pauvcontrol, pulseaudio, etc..... So much the better. |
I am going to give it a spin !

I tried to install it on real hardware from DVD, but the Debian installer froze right after the partitioning stage. I had to hard-reboot the machine (as the keyboard had frozen as well). Overall, the installer was very slow, and for a few unpleasant seconds the empty fuchsia background reminded me of BSOD...

UbuntuBSD
I downloaded an ISO from Sourceforge (ugh, but that was the only option) a couple of weeks ago and installed it in vbox. I'm running the LXDE DE. It is light weight. Other than running a Unix kernel, free of systemd, the best initial impression was the ease of package management with Debian/Ubuntu aptitude/apt-get/synaptic. I played around with PC-BSD a while back, but really didn't have the time to get into its package management/update/upgrade procedures. If you are familiar with Debian based distros, you'll find UbuntuBSD admin friendly. I would be reluctant at this stage to install it directly on desktop/laptop hardware, fearing relatively scant hardware support. I wish the developers well. They are employees of Canonical doing this project on the side, and their aim is to get Canonical to recognize UbuntuBSD as an official Ubuntu distro. Here's a recent blurb on the project:

Interesting. Thanks, curtvaughan. More choice is always a good thing in the open source ecosystem.
