Starting to learn NetBSD...

Well, after much time of considering, I have decided to move ahead with learning NetBSD. I have been using FreeBSD for quite some time now and am pretty comfortable with it. I have used OpenBSD a little, and liked many aspects of it. After talking quite a bit with a friend who fancies NetBSD over OpenBSD I have decided to give it a shot. I have installed it to my home web/file server box and also to my notebook. I do like the installation routine, and that absolutely nothing is turnedon by default, not even SSH. The only thing I have found so far that I don't really like is that the 'adduser' script found in FreeBSD/OpenBSD and most Linux distros isn't there.. There is still the 'useradd' command, but I prefer the prompted 'adduser' myself. I am currently working on installing the pkgsrc tree and installing apache, php, etc..

If anyone has any suggested readings, little HOWTO guides or something, I would certainly appreciate it. As of right now, I am just looking through documentation on the NetBSD website.

Thanks!

I like NetBSD as well. I used 2.x for a while, but I am now waiting for the official release of version 3.0. One thing I noticed is that NetBSD has a smaller community when compared to FreeBSD so there isn't as much third party documentation relative to FreeBSD. The good thing is that the online documentation on the NetBSD site is very good and it got me going with no hassle. At the mo, I am playing around with FreeBSD a lot because I want to learn more of its ins and outs instead of just tinkering.

And you should stay that way..
I think "The NetBSD Guide" on the NetBSD website is just awesome... and even if you're not using NetBSD, it's a great guide to get you up and running with a UNIX/BSD OS.

I love NetBSD as well. As reddazz, I'm waiting for 3.0 release. It's supposed to offer support for X on sparc machines. It's not possible to have X-server with the current implementation of NetBSD on Sparc machines yet . a. I never truly used NetBSD on my desktop, but as a server, it's awesome

I installed it a few days ago. I quite like this release and will probably use it regularly. I however faced two minor nuisances. The scrollwheel on my mouse will not work at all using xorg and I have tried various configurations and protocols. Another problem is my soundcard, it gets detected alright, but there is no sound at all even after tinkering with the aumix. I am trying to fix these problems, but posting on bsdforums.org has not yielded any help over the last few days.
