SMTP Authentication

I have my FreeBSD 4.9 server running Exim 4.xx, working with SMTP authentication. I want to configure the server so that it will only allow authenticated mail to be sent through. Currently, it relays for hosts by some ip addresses of our customers, but I want to move everyone to authenticate their outgoing mail. What command would I be looking for, and where in the config would I want to put it. Also, I don't know if anyone else has done this, but will it put a heavy load on the server, and slow things down, or will it be seemless to our users?

Thanks for any help
