samba server in freebsd 8.2

I know now that there is a samba package on the FreeBSD installation DVD when you install gnome and xorg but the way it works seems to be a little different than it's linux counter part. for instance the way you enable it is by putting this in the /etc/rc.conf
Code:
samba4_enable="YES"
and that instead of having a smb.conf file it has a smb4.conf file

also the one thing that doesn't make sense to me is the fact that there isn't these commands
Code:
smbpasswd to change the password of samba users
smbuser -a to add more samba users
and the smb4.conf file doesn't recognize lines like
writable = yes
browsable = yes
valid users = some users

i don't get a startup just error messages. what exactly to i have to do in order to get samba working in freebsd

i have already went through the handbook and there is nothing that is of any help in there, apparently the samba server software is pre-installed on the BSD operating system but has issues when it comes to running it, how do i resolve these issues. i have been told to read the handbook many times already but i find nothing that pertains to my problem in it

Are we reading the same handbook?
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...ork-samba.html

Samba isn't installed in FreeBSD unless you installed it.
The handbook tells you exactly how to install and configure it.
It tells you how to start and stop it manually, or with rc.conf
The port is at /usr/ports/net/samba(version no.)
That would be
Code:
pkg_add -r samba34
or
Code:
 cd /usr/ports/net/samba34 && make install clean
Your smb.conf is at /usr/local/etc/smb.conf

Quote:
samba4_enable="YES"
Where did you find that? The handbook says samba_enable="YES"

Quote:
Note: The recommended backend is now tdbsam, and the following command should be used to add user accounts:

# pdbedit -a -u username
Read the handbook and do what it says. Samba works fine on FreeBSD. FreeBSD isn't known for having the latest versions of software like a rolling Linux release, it's known for it's rock solid stability.

i would use the ports but we don't know how to set up our own port collection, we don't like fetching software from the internet we prefer to have it on our local server instead of fetching it from the internet every time, we have gotten around to installing a package collection but it will be nice to hear that samba3 works as well from the package collection as it does from the ports

Samba works fine installed from a pre compiled package.
People use ports when they want to compile software with specific settings, or for a specific architecture or something. Then there is some software that you'll have to compile yourself because there is no package.
You can make packages from installed ports, you can download packages and keep them. You still need to upgrade your machine and ports though, and you will run into dependency problems.

See the man pages for
make package
pkg_create
portupgrade
portmaster
portsnap
