After I do a pkg_add or download and install any application, how do i know what to type into the terminal to execute it? Is there a rule of thumb or something? I can't seem to find it in the handbook...
Unfortunetally, there is no "Easy" way to know what an application is named. It's not in the handbook either. My first recommendation is that you type "rehash" and try a couple obvious names.
If you press CTL-D after a couple of characters it will list all the commands that start with that. Sometimes even that won't help... Like linux-enemyterritory... or whatever. That was hidden so well I had to search in the package description to find it.
I guess, the best way for me to know what to recommend is if you just name the application you installed. Don't be discouraged by the whole comment about linux-et... that game really installed in a poor location and without a name I expected.
Anyway, most times it is the same name as the port... gaim is started with gaim, firefox with firefox, and so on.
i usually i look in the pkg-plist file in the port directory to know the program's name and it's location(/usr/local/bin or /usr/X11R6/bin most of the time).
if using bash shell you don't have i think the rehash command, it applies to csh or tcsh shell.
for example look at the et directory, there should be a et-linux executable or a bin directory containing executables.
Like eterm you have to type Eterm... that drove me crazy. Pkg-descr are your friend... see how they spell it. If you see a capital letter, that might be your problem.
Nothing I've installed so far has been too crazy though.
