I decided to install FreeBSD on my laptop and while updating the ports collection my network card which is a Realtek 8139 I believe keeps crapping out on me. It would update ports for about 30 seconds then this error would appear and it would die on me.

Would anyone know how to solve this problem?

What version of Freebsd are you running? This is a long shot seeing how old the post is but it seems to be almost exaclty the same problem. If you are running 5.1 update that OS!

Im running 5.2.1 yet I still get that problem.

I ran BSD before and have decided to come back to it because I need a few of its capabilities. Last time I ran it, it was flawless. Now I get nothing but errors and problems. Its pissing me off because I am on the verge of leaving bsd and going elsewhere. I really dont want to because I like how bsd works and I know how bsd works, learning something new is gonna be a major pita.

Hopefully this forum can help me with all my problems and I wont have to change. BSDforums.com is useless and there is nowhere else to go.

Try turning off APCI, it might be causing a conflict with your card... hope this helps. (Check your BIOS too.)

ACPI in the bios or the startup in BSD. My laptops bios is is empty there is nothing there I can change.

I have the exact same problem with FreeBSD and my Realtek nic. So I installed a 3com card and it works great. Just get a 3com card. They don't sell crap.

This is a laptop, I cant change internal card. If I could id get a netgear.

Hate to say it but kly546 makes an excellent point... I always steer clear of realtek, they might cost next to nothing but they also tend to be much slower and leave more of the work to the cpu. Not that this is helpful at all but keep it in mind next time you buy a laptop or nic.

Your laptop doesnt happen to be a compaq does it? All the threads i have found talking about this problem seem to somehow involve compaq laptops.

Well anyways could you post a complete ifconfig? From what i gather you might be able to make it stable by changing the media and mediaopt settings in your interfaces configuration.

Funny you should mention that. It is infact a compaq, x1000 series. I am not disputing with kly said, I agree with him in fact but I was not aware of the problem when I had originally purchased the laptop. Also whats funny is that I ran Fbsd 5.1 flawlessley for about 4 months until I formatted and accidentally killed the partition.

I have a pretty tricked out X1K as well, 7200 rpm 60 gig drive, 1150 minipci dell truemobile card flashed with orinoco firmware, 9200 pro with 64 mb of ram. BSD ran excellent. But now I need it again for the start of the new college year and I dont want to leave BSD because its fast, easy to setup and use. I dont want to learn something else when Im so familiar and satisfied with BSD.

Also, How would I go about posting what Ifconfig displays if I only have console?

I am happy I stayed with BSD, the lack of help I was getting at bsdforums.com was really making me frustrated, sad and angry. I am not one to quit so I really want to get this thing working again.

Sorry for the delayed response =) If you want you can try using your terminals cursor. If you have mouse support you can copy and paste it. It has worked with me when I used terminal only.

I don't think you'll have to leave *BSD. I bought a Realtek card (~$4.00) it works like a charm. I don't personally see any problem with it. You might want to check google. When I checked google for your problem, I actually saw a lot of posts for it. You might get a faster response (or the one you're looking for) that way too, sorry I can't really be of assistance.

Can you disable the pcibios from your BIOS itself? Or you can you do that from your Laptop?
