Am no expert but looks like all is well except the the actual driver configuration. For all you need to know to check that SiS driver out go to www.winischhofer.net. Gives history, technical explanations AND step-by-step instructions about your SiS driver options on 'nix OS's. Good luck.

The default setup is that you have use a windows manager (xdm or gdm). I suggest typing #xdm and then logging in at the X prompt. You can set the type of windows manager you want to use in the .profile.

Also you only have 24 bit depth setup, it might be having a problem with that depth. Try adding 16 bit at 800x600 and see if it runs.

Edit: spelling.

thanks for replying manadien, binidiot

X11 :

- xdm doesn't appear to do anything, the cursor flickers a little and that's it
- gdm:

Code:
-bash-2.05b# gdm
gdm_config_parse: Can't find the gdm group (nobody). Aborting!
- depth 16 and video modes '800x600' didn't solve anything ..

I don't understand this as .. I followed the instructions in the handbook:
Code:
# XFree86 -configure
followed by
Code:
# XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new
okay .. the handbook sais:

Quote:
If a black and grey grid and an X mouse cursor appear, the configuration was successful. To exit the test, just press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace simultaneously.
In deed, a grey screen appears and an X mouse . I can move the mouse's cursor too . So it should work right ?

Code:
# cp XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config
And when I perform 'startx' - the error messages I've posted earlier ..
Where am I going wrong !?

CDROM mounting problem:

It seems I've ran into another problem ..

Code:
-bash-2.05b# mount /dev/acd0c /cdrom
mount: /dev/acd0c on /cdrom: incorrect super block
(from /etc/fstab)

Code:
/dev/acd0c /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0
Any ideas ?

Quote:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection
When I mentioned adding depths its in this portion of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. The line "Depth 24" and "Modes 1024x768" means it will only try 24 bit color and 1024x768 size. Just before the Depth line add this so it looks like below:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Now in order to change the color depth it will try just change the line DefaultDepth from "24" to "16" to try the lower color.

Hey, those looked like valid sync rates to me. Unfair. That's like messing around with your stereo all morning and then someone points out the blown fuse nest to the power cord.....
