OpenBSD running very hot

I installed OpenBSD a couple weeks ago and I like it very much except...it heats up my computer like no other. My CPU temp was almost never above 130F with Linux; now, hitting 140+ with OpenBSD while Web browsing is normal (right now, running X/Fluxbox, an aterm, Mozilla, and Gaim, it's 154). I've had my computer shut off while ripping a CD because it's just too hot. I have no idea where to start - what could cause this?

Simple all those fancy security features such as encrypted swap partitions(yes it is not enabled by default) take their toll on the processor. Security comes at the cost of processor overhead. In short your processor has to work harder when running open bsd because of all the built in security mechanism. If your looking for a bsd that runs a bit cooler give freebsd a try. If your looking for all kinds of crazy security features at the price of performance than stick with open bsd.

Actually you are wrong. In my ignorance, I overlooked something simple - I needed to clean the dust out from my heatsink. I did that and it's running at 93 now.

I was thinking that as well, software causing you to heat up like that,....come on.

Maybe take off the heatsink & reseat it with thermal compound. [I'm guessing you are not using the stock hsf with the little rubber thingy.]

Blowing out dust, I do that as well as vacume my case filters at least once a month.
