OpenBSD on IBM TP T42?
 

i was thinking about giving OpenBSD a try since i never worked with a Unix system before. i have an IBM TP T42 (pentium m, radeon mobility 7500 and intel pro/wireless bg2200)

i checked the OpenBSD website but wasn't able to find an entry about hardware compatibility. has anybody experience with OpenBSD on IBM TP's? are there drivers for my agp and wireless card. do i have to compile the kernel by myself to get the hardware working and if so is there a documentation about it (as with GNU/Linux)?

after extensive online research (typing "openbsd hardware compatibility" into google :facepalm: ) i found that most of the hardware is supported.

still anybody any experiences with openbsd and ibm thinkpads. :::

I don't have experience myself, but having read misc@openbsd for years I can tell you that a lot or people run OpenBSD on Thinkpads.

The question becomes "exactly what hardware does the Thinkpad in question have?" You need to check the guts.

I run OpenBSD on a T43 without incident.

As someone new to OpenBSD, you will save yourself countless hours of frustration by taking the time now, as a newbie, to study the official FAQ published by the OpenBSD project:

This is the single best document available on OpenBSD's current feature set. Putting serious time into studying it will save you a great deal of aggravation -- especially if you are new to Unix.

thanks for the replies and the links. by now i installed OpenBSD not on my laptop but on my desktop. i figure since i used slackware now for some time a BSD unix would not be that different. we'll see about that ;). i'll try to find my way slowly step by step and will come back here if i can't manage it on my own.
